The smell had informed them of what they might discover in the container. Imogen gave out a muffled cry and placed her hand over her mouth. The carnage was incomprehensible.

Kane is searching for several things in this novel. He is a veteran of the war in Afghanistan and is suffering from PTSD. He wants to be at peace with himself and others. He also lost one of his best friends in combat and that wears on his conscience. Kane's sister has also disappeared and he feels compelled to search for her. In this journey, he meets a young girl, Poppy with a most mysterious background. Added to the mix of characters the reader will also meet Joe and Jim, ten-year-old twins. Toss in a couple of archaeologists (Oliver and Allen) that are really intent on solving ancient secrets and the cast is nearly complete!
This is truly an outstanding novel. The mix of characters is impressive and all of them play an important role. Imagine mixing witchcraft, PTSD, flint spearheads, and a mysterious doll and be able to tie up everything at the conclusion of the book. I loved the wolf-dog Flint and thought he also provided many answers to Kane's questions. The journey through the garden is full of descriptions that will make one gasp...just when the reader is able to finally breathe there is another twist and turn.
All in all, most highly recommended and for multiple reasons. Excellent character development, a solid plot and a superlative ending which I didn't see coming. The book is a journey of 'soul and mind' just as Kane experiences as he progresses through the garden.
