OT because I can't reply to you on that crochet thread since I'm not in that community...also on the shark booties for the ten seconds Robin would keep them on!  I so so so so want some for her and know it's entirely a waste of time and effort because she hates having socks on.

What If book coming soon

Randall Munroe, of xkcd fame, is releasing a book on September 2, filled with expanded favourites from his What If series. What If?: Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions is available for pre-order in several countries, in both paper and e-book format, from all appearances.

One to look forward to!

What if I pre-ordered said book?

Coverage of end of Expedition 38 of the ISS

The farewell and hatch closure has already been shown, but the undocking coverage is in about 10 minutes, and later you can catch the deorbit burn and landing.

Online streaming of these at http://www.nasa.gov/ntv.

Preparations are underway for the Expedition 38 crew consisting of International Space Station Commander Oleg Kotov and Flight Engineer Sergey Ryazanskiy of the Russian Federal Space Agency and Michael Hopkins of NASA to depart the space station and land in Kazakhstan. The three crew members will board their Soyuz TMA-10M spacecraft and close hatches at 4:45 p.m. EDT.

Kotov handed over command of the orbiting complex to Koichi Wakata of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency during a ceremony on Sunday, March 9. Wakata is the first Japanese astronaut to perform this duty. When the Soyuz undocks, Expedition 39 formally will begin. A video of Sunday's ceremony is available at http://go.nasa.gov/1h6Ubr7.

NASA Television coverage times for Soyuz activities are listed below. These activities also will stream online at http://www.nasa.gov/ntv.

Bonus xp for Diablo III this weekend

Starting at around 8pm EST today, bonus 50% experience on all your D3 characters.  Good time to level up new characters, like your crusader.

Hopefully I'm in a gaming mood by then..

I've had a few issues where the client switches to the launcher, then I have to manually go back to the game client. It doesn't log me out, but makes it a pain when I'm in the middle of a fight. Only happens on D3. Now I just close the launcher so it's not running in the background anymore.

Interacting binary

This is really neat.  +Brian Koberlein talks of a system with an unusual star structure.  Read more below.

Mellow Yellow

A new paper in Astronomy and Astrophysics heralds the discovery of a yellow hypergiant star known as HR 5171.  Such stars are exceedingly rare, with only 12 such stars known to exist within our galaxy.

A yellow hypergiant star is a very massive, very luminous star.  They typically have a mass between 20 – 50 times that of the Sun, but their temperature is roughly similar to that of the Sun.  What makes them particularly rare is that they are unstable.  They are so bright that their light pushes away the outer layers of the star.  Because of this, they are stars in transition.

What makes this particular yellow hypergiant unusual is that it is also a binary star.  The team analyzed observations of the star and found that it is an eclipsing binary with a period of about 1300 days.  This is surprising because the star itself has a diameter about 6 times that of Earth’s orbit.  Given its size and mass, the companion star must be so close that they touch, known as an interacting binary.

Because the two stars are in contact, they each have an impact on the other’s evolution.  The companion can strip material from the primary, and in turn will increase in mass.  As the primary hypergiant continues to expand, the two stars will interact more strongly.

Needless to say, things could get very interesting for this system.

Somehow the Enterprise would manage to break down next to this and the crew would be minutes from death until they depressurize the shuttle bay.

An interesting reaction to a cell phone ring during a concert.  (The even more correct response is to take a spare bow and throw it with great force at the head of the person with the cell phone.  Yes, I have rage towards people who make noise during concerts/opera/ballet.)

Wouldn't have been my reaction, but then, I don't play the viola.

Perhaps it's projection but to me he appears to be on the verge of flying into a rage from the moment the phone rings until he walks off.

Introduction

I'm Tara. I try not to be rude, or be a jerk, and ask for the same in return. Sometimes I fail, but attempt to correct it as appropriate.

Whilst my interests are varied, most of my posts will tend to science, particularly astronomy and physics, with some feminist and Canadian posts thrown in.  And recently, my crochet adventures.  A light peppering of other topics are periodically added to keep things interesting.

There are days of posting frenzies by me, but generally, I try to keep it to a few a day, with days off.

The G+ experience is what I wanted from social media and more. This is a fantastic platform for following passions and interests, while keeping some contact with loved ones.

Personalised G+ address is gplus.to/tamulder.  You can claim your own at http://gplus.to/.

Note:  While I don't tend to make posts with cursing or "adult" material, I will not be making kid-friendly posts or censoring material.  If you are under 18, please do not circle me.

Another note:  Please do not mistake politeness for meekly standing by while others say incorrect, ridiculous, creepy, or mean things.  Calling a person out is not always rude.

Notable things said about me:

"Hrm, Tara Mulder... okay fine, your rampant infidelity has saved you.  Once again."
  - Kimberly Chapman

The above quote is taken wildly out of context for entertainment purposes.  It is not an invitation.

"Happy birthday, +Tara Mulder, my stream is filled with men kissing because of you."

Interests

Interests include economics, mathematics, science, science-fiction, analytics, risk management, feminism, astronomy, zombies, port, wine, gaming, golfing, blacksmithing, crochet, and a tonne of other things.

I may be a little obsessed with Doctor Who, but most of that is done through pictures and links on my Pinterest board.  Same for zombies and other things that tend to be pictures or videos.  If you're really interested in what I've pinned, look me up at Pinterest.

Do you know me?

If you know me IRL, make sure I don't miss you joining!  (Edit: Until G+ decouples event notifications from mention notifications, I'm set to only get notifications from my circles.  So only if you know me in RL, say something in an existing post to say hi and let me know you're here. Otherwise, please keep comments somewhat relevant to posts.)

If you don't know me, please don't leave comments telling or asking me to add you.  See the disclaimer section below for more on that.

Things To Love About Toronto

An occasional project by me is “Things To Love About Toronto.” For now, I'm only doing a Downtown Edition, but that'll be expanded the next time I go to the zoo.

This will be photographs of different parts of the city (taken by me, unless I can't get a good picture and need to use another one), with blurbs about what it is and why it's awesome. Please note that I'm not even close to a professional (or even very good by amateur standards), so this is partly about learning both to take photos from better perspectives, and learning to use extras, like cropping, colour adjustments, filters, and frames. I'm trying to figure out on my own how to emphasize certain features. For now, all photographs are taken with a BlackBerry PlayBook, and post-processed with an app called PicShop by esDot Development Studios.

Hopefully others will enjoy seeing aspects of Toronto. Feel free to ask questions about the scenes I present, but I may not always be able to answer everything. Will try my best, though!

Disclaimer

I'm not looking to hook up with strangers here, however fascinating you may be.  Callouts targeted at this goal will ensure my blocking or blocking/reporting you, depending on the inappropriateness of said comment. I am not interested in “sexy chat,” cybering, exchanging photos, or hangouts with strangers for the purpose of getting to know each other better (that can be done through non-creepy text, and we can later decide if we want to be friends.) That is not an inclusive list, but pretty much boils down to don't be a creeper.

When writing up on a topic, please remember that I've been wrong before, and probably will be again.  Please point out (politely) if you see an error in a post or comment from me.  If it requires a more detailed post or discussion, please take it out of post, and we can discuss it between the two of us.

People I circle tend to be people I know IRL, or people who post on my aforementioned interests and/or are wonderful engagers.  Particularly if they add their own commentary, rather than simply sharing a post or article with nothing of their own to say.  If you have interesting, fun, or insightful comments to add to discussions, I'll probably check you out.

If I remove you after adding, please do not take offense.  There is only so much I can follow, and I try to keep my circles somewhat clean.  Blame G+ for removing incoming streams.

If you have extreme political views (left or right), that's fine, but if that's all you post about, I'll probably lose interest and not circle you.  If you have extreme sexist or racist or homophobic views, that's not fine, and if you put that on my posts, I'll block you, and report, if appropriate.

People who excessively notify, including through events, will be promptly removed from my circles.  My definition of "excessively" may vary greatly from your definition.

Sadly, more things I really wish I didn't have to say.  If you don't know me but are tagging me in random pictures?  If you try to chat, strongly implying that you're the current president of the U.S.A.?  Blocked.

Finally, I can get really wordy.  Working on that!  Apologies if I do it in your comments section.
