We had dinner at Tar & Roses on Valentine's Day and it was perfect! Apparently, it was booked a few months in advance. We arrived at 8:45 and our table was ready within a few minutes of waiting. Our table was the second to last near the kitchen. Perfect spot to see the live action and how everyone work I love that Tar & Roses didn't do a prix fixe menu. Most restaurants tend to do that on Valentine's night. We were able to order everything off the regular menu. Here's what we ordered: -yellowtail crudo -oxtail dumplings -king trumpet mushrooms -dry aged ribeye We couldn't be more impressed with everything. The food was amazing! The Yellowtail Crudo was fresh and had a spicy kick to it. The oxtail dumplings were so delicious! We could've easily eaten another order! The King Trumpet mushrooms were tender and I loved the soft boiled egg on top. The steak was done beautifully. Medium rare as requested, flavorful, juicy, and tender. We also had a nice bottle of red wine from Napa. We ended our perfect date with the bread pudding and vanilla bean ice cream. Oh, it was incredible! It was soft and warm and not overly sweet. Service was outstanding. I highly suggest checking out Tar & Roses for the next special celebration. Valet parking: $8

Tar & Roses was my first exposure to dining with New American small plates. I came here on a Saturday night with my friend, who made the reservation, and we were seated within 5 minutes. It being our first time here, our waitress was very helpful in telling us which were the popular items on the menu and suggested that we ordered 5-6 plates to share between the two of us. Taking her suggestion, we ordered 5 plates: bone marrow, oxtail dumpling, cauliflower, spaghetti carbonara, and strawberry ricotta crostata for dessert. Never having bone marrow before, I was excited to try it. Unfortunately, I learned that I will not be a fan of bone marrow because of the gelatinous texture to it. However, the red onion marmalade that came with the dish was delicious. The oxtail dumpling, cauliflower, and spaghetti carbonara were all equally delicious. But the one thing I would suggest having from here is the strawberry ricotta crostata for dessert. Personally, I'm not a fan of strawberries but our waitress recommended it and wow, am I glad we ordered it. The dessert was delicious even if I didn't eat most of the strawberries. I'm excited to come back and try the other dishes Tar & Roses offer.

I love this place! Definitely one of my favorites! :) The menu changes all the time and they only use the freshest ingredients that are in season. :) Very romantic, intimate ambiance. Make sure you make reservations! Service was excellent! FOOD: *Oxtail dumplings - Great flavor! *Hamachi collar - A seasonal dish that was well-seasoned with a lot of meat *Roasted cauliflower - Very good! *Dry aged ribeye for two - Cooked perfectly! Ordered it medium and it was juicy and perfectly flavored. Highly recommend! DESSERT: *Strawberry Crostata with Honeycomb ice cream - Must try it! Simply amazing! :) PARKING: Valet or meters I can't wait to come back! :)

Good restaurant for a late night dinner and drink. It was very lovely on a Saturday night, and our wait was 30 minutes. We had the fried whole fish. The presentation is great. The fish was pretty good, but it really came with the dipping sauce. The service was friendly and responsive.

Went in with an open mind, some items on the menu looked interesting so I was willing to give it a try. This was our 16th anniversary and we had Amanda as our waitress, one word to describe her. Super. We started with popped corn which was interesting with the hint of spicy flavor, then we got the spaghetti with soft egg as a small plate and deep fried snapper for 2 that did not stand a chance when we got through with it. Ended the evening with some coffee and the top two desserts which you can't go wrong with either one. We had the strawberry dessert with honeycomb ice cream and the chocolate tar with sea salt ice cream. Let's just say nothing was left, and will be coming back with more friends this time. BTW, the "damage" wasn't so bad considering all the stuff we had. Thank you for a great evening.

Hands down one of my favorite places to go in Santa Monica! The ambiance and decor of the restaurant is amazing. Our server was very helpful in explaining the specials to us and very attentive. My water glass was full the entire meal which was wonderful. The Ox Tail Dumplings is where it's at! It was so delicious! A lot of the restaurants in the Westside don't live up to the hype, but this one does!

Thanks Sarah, it makes our day to hear such kind words from you! I hope you come by again real soon... Cheers, JOHNNIE

One of my favorite restaurants in LA, the food will leave you craving for more. The only downside is this place is always busy, so if you don't make a reservation in advance, you will be waiting quite a while. I waited an hour and a half the first time I was here, but it was still worth it!
Response from the owner - 7 months ago
Judy, I'm so bummed you had such a long wait! That's definitely not the norm for us, and I absolutely agree that a reservation's the way to go. As for your comments about the food -- you've brought a huge smile to my face with your kind words, and I'm very excited to have you back! See you soon. -Andrew Kirschner

RESOUNDING 5 STARS. The only downside to Tar & Roses is that it's so far into the Westside -- if only they opened a location in Downtown, this place would be perfect (for my convenience, of course). Abe provided amazing service. The back enclosed patio had an incredible ambiance. ---------------- FOOD: Bone Marrow = Oily, fatty, and delicious. Charcuterie Board with: Duck Rillette, Toscana, & Cheese = One of the best charcuterie boards I've had -- fresh meats, delicious cheese. Octopus Skewers = Perfectly grilled octopus. Oxtail Dumplings = As delicious and flavorful as it sounds. So good. Fried Snapper for 2 = This was better-fried than most Thai restaurants I've been to (and that's saying a LOT since Thais are masters of fried snapper). We KILLED this snapper down to whatever was left that was inedible. Delicious. Strawberry Ricotta Crostana = Delicious as hell. -------------- 3 drinks each for $188.34 (including tip & tax) Tar & Roses is one of the best restaurants I've been to in Southern California -- from the ambiance to the service to the incredible food. One of the easiest 5 star reviews I've ever given.

Your incredible review has absolutely made my day, Roy! I can't tell you how wonderful it is to read that everything you tried was delicious. The fried snapper is certainly a favorite among our customers, so I love knowing that you and your friends felt the same. It's also great to hear the charcuterie board was one of the best you've had! While I know it's a bit of a drive for you, I hope you'll come back to see us soon. When you do please make sure to say hello so that I can thank you personally and spoil you a little in return! Thanks again. -Andrew Kirschner, Owner
