Google have released a new series of videos titled “Bring Your Local Business Online”. The running time totals thirty minutes and they give businesses advice for doing just that even without a website!

In case you missed it, Google recently made a change to their guidelines for webmasters and I thought it was worth pointing out:
Below is an excerpt of the before and after text, with the changes bolded.

Before:

In general, webmasters can improve the rank of their sites by increasing the number of high-quality sites that link to their pages.

After:

In general, webmasters can improve the rank of their sites by creating high-quality sites that users will want to use and share.

This is a pretty big change!  Google is no longer advising people to focus on link building.  Will that impact your strategy at all?

They said you should focus on creating high-quality sites that users will want to use (so that means adding new content that is high quality, helpful and informative and also bulking up/improving your existing content) but did you also notice that they said content that users will want to share?

Google understands the growing importance of social media.  We already know that "social juice" is a factor in rankings but I think the fact that Google mentioned creating content that is share-worthy right in their guidelines means they are going to begin placing even more value on how much your content is shared online.

So that too should alter your strategy if you aren't already active on social media!  Think about ways to jazz up your content and make it more likely to be shared online.  Make it easier for people to share your content (get those Tweet and Share and +1 buttons prominently placed).

Things are changing rapidly in search engine land, don't be left behind.

We are experimenting with optimised web page rental and have just launched this page to test the waters, if we can get it to page 1 of Google then we'll launch more so that they can be rented by anyone.
