Tune into this Google+ hangout Friday morning at 9am to start your Day of the Girl off strong! Rockstar volunteer Vivian Nunez will be representing She's the First. So happy we are a part of the conversation!

Friday, Oct 11th is The UN's Official Day Of The Girl Child. This year's theme is "Innovate To Educate" and in celebration I (+Daria Musk) will be hosting a special Hangout On Air with some wonderful organizations and amazing young girls around the world!

We'll be joined by representatives from +The School Fund and a few young female students from Tanzania who will tell us how the opportunity to get educated has impacted their lives and inspired their dreams!

We'll also have a representative from +She's the First another great program that gets girls into schools worldwide! We'll also be joined by a classroom of girls from The Fraser-Woods School in Newtown, Connecticut who have been raising money to send girls their age to school through The School Fund!

We'll share stories, learn about the extraordinary benefits of girls education and I'll even close things out with a song or two ;)

Hooray for #TheDayOfTheGirl !

Every girl can be the hero of her own story--if she has an education.
Introduction
Tammy Tibbetts is President and Founder of She’s the First, a non-profit organization that sponsors girls’ education with the goal of creating more first-generation graduates worldwide.

Tammy is the first in her family to graduate from college--she studied journalism at The College of New Jersey, where her final reporting assignment unexpectedly put her on the path to social entrepreneurship. After reporting on a foundation that sponsored children’s education in war-torn Liberia, she discovered the urgent need to give girls worldwide access to an education. This was a story she could not walk away from as an unbiased reporter, so she traveled to Liberia and began to volunteer for the cause after graduation.

Meanwhile, Tammy landed her dream job at Hearst Magazines, where her five-year career included being a founding web editor of teen websites and then the first social media editor for Seventeen, which later earned her a spot among the industry’s “13 Under 30.”

In 2009, Tammy had the idea to launch a social media-driven media campaign that would inspire Millennial women to fundraise for girls’ education sponsorships. She shared her concept with a Facebook friend, Christen Brandt (now Director of International Operations), and they launched She’s the First. By 2012, She's the First was a thriving non-profit organization and her full-time job.

Today, She’s the First sponsors more than 280 girls around the world and has funded nearly 600 years of education, while also supporting a network of 80 co-ed campus chapters. She’s the First takes a forward-thinking approach in connecting students and alumni globally, so they can collaborate with each other on solutions for a better world.

Tammy is a frequent speaker on social entrepreneurship and Millennial leadership and has been recognized among Fast Company’s League of Extraordinary Women and Forbes’ 30 Under 30 in Education. She is the 2013 recipient of Diane von Furstenberg’s People’s Voice Award. (As proof that immense change is possible: 10 years earlier, she was voted Most Shy in her high school yearbook.)

When not running She’s the First, Tammy is running around Central Park or to fitness class.
