Pictured below, the core of the Advanced Test Reactor. The blue glow of Cherenkov Radiation lets you know it’s turned on. What causes the glow? The fission reaction generates high-energy electrons that rush out in every direction at damn near the speed of light in a vacuum. But, the speed of light in water is slower, and whenever a particle travels through a medium like air or water faster than the speed light travels through that medium, Cherenkov Radiation can be observed.

You should try this experiment yourself. Whenever your are in a Maglev train, just place some paper clips on the floor. When the train is accelerating, the paperclips will stand vertical in response to the electric field of the train. This is similar to what happens when we bring a charged comb near small bits of paper.
