Are movie universes doomed to collapse? +Jim Ross  looks at them through the kaleidoscope of physics.
"In the creative sense, energy may also follow another interpretation of the second law of Thermodynamics – it will degrade to the point where nothing happens naturally. Here, creative energy becomes creative entropy: disorder, lack of structure, floating and useless energy."
Jim Ross examines how the movie universes being created will eventually collapse, and be subject to the same science and laws as our own universe

"THE NICE GUYS is a crucial reminder that we can do action comedies without constantly winking to the audience. It shows not everyone in this type of film needs to be described as ‘a badass’ – they can be a fucking idiot, and that’s ok."
THE NICE GUYS doesn't break any moulds and is obviously a Shane Black creation - but that is precisely why it's good. Jim Ross reviews.

+Jim Ross  reviews Tom Tykwer's tale of desert-bound mid life crisis, A HOLGRAM FOR THE KING. Engaging, but lacking thematic heft and conviction.
"...it does often feel like LOST IN TRANSLATION (FROM ARABIC), perhaps – and those common themes feel malnourished in a poor man's version. Having Hanks’ character exchange emails with his love interest during a montage is also ill-advised as it begins to feel a bit like YOU’VE GOT MAIL (INSHALLAH)."
Despite the always-engaging Tom Hanks, the themes of A HOLOGRAM FOR THE KING feel malnourished and an imitation of better films. Jim Ross reviews.

Bringing the best of arthouse and festival cinema into focus
Introduction
TAKE ONE is an independent film magazine and website run by volunteers. We cover the best in independent and festival cinema year round and every September we are responsible for the full, comprehensive coverage of the Cambridge Film Festival.

Film festivals we have covered include the Edinburgh Film Festival, Cambridge African Film Festival, London Korean Film Festival, Brighton Film Festival, Norwich Film Festival and Aesthetica short film festival in York. We also covered the British Silent Film Festival in print as well as online, and from here on we will continue to keep you abreast of all things cinema, whilst reporting back from events and film festivals around the world.

We promise that we will do our best to do our duty to film makers and film lovers, to entertain, encourage and inform, and never to carp at or crap on good, honest film. Stick around, chums.
