For the year, the private equity index trailed the blue-chip S&P 500 index by 244 basis points, but outpaced the small-cap Russell 2000 index by 636 basis points.
U.S. private equity performance has largely mirrored that of public equities over the five-year period. But over longer time frames, the private equity index exhibits significantly higher returns on an annualized basis.
The Cambridge Associates U.S. Private Equity index returned 11.25% net of fees, expenses and carried interest in 2014, according to data released Wednesday. The index returned 0.83% in the fourth quarter.

I saw an automobile go slowly by with no one in the driver’s seat. For those wondering, I had not been overserved on the airplane.
The next day, someone explained to me that computer-guided vehicles were being tested in the area. The technology has the potential to end the need for Uber drivers, who only recently began ending the need for taxicabs. The disruptors may soon be disrupted.

After years of finding bargains in a down real-estate market, some purchasers from abroad now face sharply higher housing prices because their nations’ currencies have fallen against the dollar. That could reshape certain U.S. housing markets where foreign buyers have been a stabilizing force.
Many deals in regions that have long counted on foreign buyers are no longer as attractive for those paying in rubles, euros or Canadian dollars.

57 percent of adults said agricultural producers could use less water by changing crops and increasing efficiency. Only 26 percent believe ag users cannot reduce water use.
Although a broad majority of Californians claim to support the governor's mandatory cutbacks on water use, seven in 10 homeowners said it would be a serious problem if their local water district raised their water rates, according to a Field Poll released Tuesday.

recycle two-thirds of a home's water by using gray water--soapy water from showers, dishwashers, washing machines, and sinks--for irrigation and flushing toilets. 
A new technology is rolling out in drought-parched California that enables homes to recycle two-thirds of the water they use, and KB Home recently made it standard in a San Diego development.

PE funds do not take all of your money at one go, but ask you to release the amount in tranches as they find new investment opportunities. At the end of the term, the funds sell their investments in the secondary market and return the money to the investors.
Real estate private equity funds have been attracting unprecedented amounts of capital, with assets under management reaching an all-time high of $724 billion.

Builders broke ground last month on 1.14 million homes at a seasonally adjusted annual rate, up 20.2% from March. That's the most since November 2007. Economists surveyed by Bloomberg predicted a rise to 1.02 million. March's total housing starts were revised to 944,000 from 926,000.
The home building market perked up in April along with milder weather, as housing starts surged 20%.

The $100-million 38-storey condo tower will take three years to complete. The units will range in size from 300 square feet to 437 square feet with a starting price of $139,000.
Six years ago, Jon Stovell and Reliance Properties built the first micro-lofts in Vancouver, turning a defunct Gastown single room occupancy (SRO) into a 30-unit rental project with suites ranging in size from 219 to 291 square feet. Tiny by standards of the day.
