Introduction
I'm Tabita Green, the author of Her Lost Year: A Story of Hope and a Vision for Optimizing Children's Mental Health.

I blog on the intersection of simple living, health, and social change. I'm also working in my hometown, Decorah, Iowa, to create a resilient, sustainable community.

To make use of my college education, I also manage the web content team at Luther College, an amazing liberal arts school in the Northeast corner of Iowa (where my husband, Todd, also happens to teach).

Progressives, We Need to Focus!

What do you think?
There is so much division in our country right now. It's time to stop bickering and come together to stand up for our rights to a government for the people.

Book Reflection: Big Magic

It's pretty magical...
Big Magic lives up to its name. It is full of magical moments, but also no nonsense thoughts about what it means to live the creative life. Recommended!

May Is Fashion Month

My daughter almost submitted me to that show "What Not To Wear" a few years ago, so I'm not even sure how I'm qualified to write this post...
In 2016, I’m trying to walk the talk via The Great Money Experiment—a year of avoiding giving my money to Big Business. Fashion (clothes, shoes, jewelry, purses) is an easy, but also hard, category for me. Easy, because I made a commitment back in 2009 to buy only clothes I need—or really, really love. When …

What do you do to cut down on energy use?
When you can't unplug completely from the grid, using less energy is the next best thing. It's not as hard as it seems!

Mental Health: It's a Social Issue

My latest guest post on the +LUTHER COLLEGE Ideas and Creations blog.
Allow kids to move, spend time in nature, explore, discover, create... sound Utopic? Tabita Green helps us imagine a society designed to optimize mental health, and then shows us how to make it a reality.

Responsible Credit Cards. Is that a Thing?

Turns out it is—as far as credit cards go.
I didn't have high hopes when I set out to find socially responsible credit cards. But I actually found one! And that wraps up the Finance/Banking month.

June Is Transportation Month

Did you know? Dogs on bikes make people smile.
How does one avoid giving money to Big Business when it comes to transportation? Easy, ditch the car! Okay, maybe easier said than done.

My Word Is Justice

What's yours?
While it's a bit limiting to think that we can each be narrowed down to one word, I have found one that resonates with me. My word is justice.

It's like one of the only times I wanna use the word, "hate". I hate injustice in all it's forms and find myself embroiled (happily, but fraughtfully (sic)) in many of these very simple and common occurrences you would think would be a no-brainer. Do people really not know how to do what is right?

On Buying Food—Slowly

Who profits from your food shopping?
Buying food slowly and intentionally is not my normal way of doing things, but I've learned quite a bit about where food comes from this month.

February is Energy/Utilities Month

I'm not sure if I'm ready to go solar. Wondering about other options...
Next up in The Great Money Experiment: Energy and Utilities. I look forward to learning all about energy use at our house and how to lower costs.

Book Reflection: Local Dollars, Local Sense

I learned a few things...
My thoughts on Michael Shuman's book, "Local Dollars, Local Sense." Spoiler alert: Local investing is not easy! But it's worth pursuing.

Brenda is a gentle and skilled healer. I always feel better after an hour (or more!) of acupuncture and massage. Highly recommended!
