Don’t Confuse Certification with Certificates of Training
These days it is becoming more and more important to have an accredited degree along with certifications, graduate credentials, specializations, or other professional designations. Many industry professionals have the term “Board Certified” or certified on their resume which shows that they have completed the requirements for certification under the standards of an Independent Regulatory Body.
An authentic professional certification is formal recognition by a respected, recognized, and established professional organization that an individual has demonstrated a proficiency within, and comprehension of, a specified body of knowledge. Most authentic professional certifications, requires that individuals demonstrate these competencies by passing an exam and having a track record of expertise in specific professional domain. Professional body in the professional discipline of project management for instance recommend individual to take the training and certification program from their accredited training and certification providers and the mandatory requirement to pass the required grade in the examination as a condition of awarding the “certified in project management” credential.  There has been a great deal of confusion as to the true meaning of certification, especially recently as individuals and companies strive to achieve and validate competencies in a competitive job market. Numerous training companies, educational institutions, and even individual training consultants are competing to sell training courses that purportedly include “certification.” In many cases, these are not certifications as they are based on a non-commercial standard body of knowledge that was developed by objective third-party entities. They are actually paper certificates awarded for participating in specific training. While there is nothing wrong with providing evidence of a course completion whether through a document and/or accredited continuing education, this should not be confused with the rigor and achievement of a professional certification.
