Neutrogena, Aveeno, Clean& Clear, Olay. Is your face wash wreaking havoc on our Oceans and waterways?

A few decades ago companies started to substitue tiny particles of plastic for natural ingredients in cosmetic proudcts – like face scrubs, toothpaste, and soaps. According to Laurnet Gilbert, director of advanced research at L’Oreal, the tiny bits of plastic exfoliant came into widespread use during the 1990’s on account of being “smoother” on the skin than natural ingredients

Wastewater treatment experts around the world are now telling us that these microbeads, hardly visible to the human eye, are too small to be filtered out by the waste water facilities. This means that over the past few decades these tiny pieces of plastic have been flowing straight from our bathroom drains, through our sewer systems, into our rivers and canals and ultimately making their way into our oceans and seas.

“Plastic soup”. That is what scientists have started to call the Oceans and lakes after seeing the devestation that a few decades of microbeads have bestowed. The Great Lakes of Canada, New York Finger lakes, Cayuga Lake, Oneida Lake, the Erie Canal, Mohawk River, St. Lawerence River, Lake Geneva and even the North Pole are just a few of the waterways that have been reportedly “choking” from the plastic pollution. Not to mention all the marine life that have been gobbling up the plastic food.

Here is a list of all the products in Canada that currently contain microbeads: http://www.beatthemicrobead.org/images/pdf/red-canada.pdf

Let's do our best to avoid them.

A big happy birthday to the creator, visionary and owner of Sylvia&Co today. Eighteen years ago Sylvia took a leap and started Sylvia&Co with a credit card and a vision. Today she employs over 20 incredibly talened individuals and finds herself surrounded by one heck of great community that she and her staff started building from the ground up 18 years ago. If that don't warrant a female warrior status, I don't know what does.

Earth Month Tip: Toxins in lipstick are difficult to avoid. The most popular brands on the market contain heavy metals, petrochemicals, and other harmful ingredients that don’t need to be there. Good news though, alternatives exist. Lipsticks that are made from botanical or mineral-based ingredients that nourish your lips and protect our environment.... Like AVEDA
