Social Saturday, a day to celebrate social enterprises, returns on 15 October and people in Swansea are being urged to use their buying power in support.

Social enterprises are businesses like any other, but it’s what they do with their profits that makes them different. The money they make is reinvested or donated to support social and environmental issues, from creating job opportunities to helping reduce poverty.

Youth Matters Awards Semi-Finalist YMCA of the Year

YMCA Swansea always ‘pushes the envelope’. We stand for quality, bravery, resilience and genuinely changing the lives of young people and our communities for the better. We champion young people’s rights in Swansea and Wales, leading by example, putting participatory practice at the heart of everything we do.

We are a thriving social enterprise, doing good business, whilst providing key services for some of the most vulnerable people across Wales. We are not a housing association, and we do not have a multi-million-pound turnover, but we are true leaders in our community from the strategic level to grass roots, and we make a real and tangible impact on the lives of young people and the wider community.

Youth Matters Awards Semi-Finalist Best Health & Wellbeing Project.

GoodVibes LGBT Youth Group Swansea is a holistic LGBT youth group at YMCA Swansea and is the only youth LGBT group in the area. It runs for two hours each week on Thursday evenings and out of this time, delivers one-to-one support and assistance to young people, other groups and organisations. GoodVibes is youth driven and led with staff support, where young people choose session topics, and frequently take on board roles to deliver sessions themselves.

LGBT+ people tend to face greater injustice than their counterparts of the same age. They are more likely to face bullying, discrimination and social isolation. GoodVibes aims to help young people learn about their rights and to be proud of who they are. The young people who attend describe it as their safe place, their family away from home. Many young people rely on the group as being central to their lives and identity.
