We recently showed our 3.5 year old daughter the original Star Wars trilogy. I have been waiting for this moment for many years. So so proud. My wife and I had discussed whether to show her the original trilogy first or the new trilogy. We chose the original. Best to experience Star Wars the way we experienced.  Prequels should be exactly that, prequels.

This wasn't her first exposure to Star Wars. The Star Wars: A Pop-Up Guide to the Galaxy (http://amzn.to/10PbwfI) has made for a great bed time book. She also has her own Force FX lightsaber mounted on her wall and loves to duel with me. Our family room is also riddled with Star Wars ships, figures and collectibles including a Darth Vader helmet.

Everything was going great watching the movies. She was completely enthralled by each episode. (We skipped a couple of scenes here and there that we thought would be a little much for her.) She asked questions all the way through. I explained the story line and characters as we went along:

- Vader is bad, Luke is good
- Leia, Han and Chewie help the Rebels fight the bad Empire
- X-wings are good, TIE fighters are bad
- Vader reveals he is Luke's father (she cried when she saw this and was in denial for the next couple of days)
- Emperor is the mastermind bad guy
- Vader eventually turns good and saves Luke from Emperor
- Vader's mask comes off and behold a kind eyed looking man who is now good, not bad

Alas we come to the final moments of Return of the Jedi where Luke, at the Ewok celebrations on Endor, looks over to the ghosts of Obi-Wan, Yoda and An...errr.....this other guy. Huh?

How was I expected to explain to my 3.5 year old that this young man was the Darth Vader-come-good-Anakin we just saw "go to sleep" a few scenes ago? It just doesn't make sense. It doesn't make sense to me as an adult let alone to my daughter. This was an absolute fail.

I can stomach all the other changes, even Han shooting first, but the replacement of Anakin for the "new guy" at the end essentially implies we must show our children new to the Star Wars films the new episodes first and then the original trilogy. This is not fair.

Now I have to dig up my old VHS copy and recut the ending in preparation for when my 1.5 year old son is ready to see Star Wars .
