Blackawton Bees

In December 2010, a rather remarkable paper was published by the Royal Society in their journal Biology Letters.  During the following year it was their second most downloaded paper.

What made this paper so remarkable was that it was the first ever peer-reviewed scientific paper published in a top journal reporting a unique finding, in which all twenty-five authors were primary school children. All twenty-five children contributed something to the paper including figures that are hand drawn in crayon.

The paper begins ‘Once upon a time…

Principal finding ‘We discovered that bumble-bees can use a combination of colour and spatial relationships in deciding which colour of flower to forage from. We also discovered that science is cool and fun because you get to do stuff that no one has ever done before. (Children from Blackawton)’.

20 years ago there were only 130 websites total, Google wasn't even around yet, and you had to pay for an email account through an ISP.

30 years ago there was no internet.

And now, one second on the internet looks like this...

While this is in good humour, I feel it says a lot about the way that science news is sensationalised (continuing the theme). It seems to be a stepwise process, but is one 'step' more to blame than another?
