Which Sponge For Which Job {A How To Guide}

Which Norwex Sponge do I need?

Norwex has a few different sponges and ‘scrubbies’ to choose from in their catalogue. When I do a party, Norwex newbies are a little confused about which sponge to add to their purchase, since there are a few options. Since this is a confusing decision for a lot of people, I’m going to take time to break it down for you, so you can decide which sponge is ‘just right’ for the jobs you might have in your home!
Why choose a Norwex Sponge?

First, we need to tackle the subject of, ‘But…why?’ Why not just grab any old sponge you can get when you’re grocery shopping? I mean, a sponge is a sponge, right? Well, no, actually. Not all sponges are created equal!

Based on personal experience, I can tell you that these sponges are the BEST sponges I’ve ever used. They are not an ‘ordinary’ sponge! I’ll go into more detail about what makes them special when I talk about each one. The most important thing you should know about all of the Norwex sponges is that these are TOP quality sponges that will last you a long time.
Spirisponge
comes in a package of 2
60 Day Warranty

This is an absorbent sponge with an abrasive wrapping. I love that this sponge is abrasive enough for tough jobs, yet WON’T scratch most surfaces. And- its encasing is earth friendly!

{Close up View of sponge}

This can be used in so many different rooms, for so many different jobs! Here are (just a few) of my favourites:

Cleaning dishes (this will NOT scratch teflon)
Scrubbing sticky spots off the counter/floors
Scrubbing the top of your ceramic stove with the Cleaning Paste. I cross my heart, that this will NOT scratch the surface. Know that this is the most effective when paired with the Cleaning Paste, and is not nearly as effective on its own (other than for a quick scrub, not a deep clean).
Scrubbing the shower or tub with Blue Diamond Cleaner. This sponge gives just enough abrasive punch to help scrub off that extra build up. Use with the Blue Diamond to be the most effective (dilute Blue Diamond, spray on surface, let sit 10 minutes, scrub with Spirisponge, then rinse).

How it compares to similar products

I’ve seen similar products to the Norwex Spirisponge in dollar tree stores and hardware stores. I’ve purchased them, out of curiosity, noticing that they were a lower price than the Norwex Spirisponges. However, once I got them home and used them, I found that they just didn’t compare to the Norwex ones! The once I’ve purchased in stores look almost identitcal, except that the criss-crossed silver parts are not quite woven as tightly. This seems to make a BIG difference, as the ‘other’ brands simply weren’t as effective at scrubbing! So, I recommend the Norwex brand, and definitely feel they’re worth the extra price! (especially since they’re so versatile and long lasting).
To clean

Add a drop of dish liquid to the middle of your sponge, and rub it against itself, rinsing out the suds when you’re done scrubbing. Or, throw in the top rack of the dishwasher.
EnviroSponge
comes in a package of 2
1 year warranty

The Norwex EnviroSponge microfiber side can remove up to 99% of bacteria when used correctly!

This is a sponge with a two-sided wrapping. One side is slightly abrasive (it’s the same material used in our Kitchen Scrub Cloth), and one side is a soft, absorbent EnviroCloth. That means that this sponge is handy for jobs that require a bit of scrubbing and/or a bit of wiping. And I’ve got to say, it is so darn handy to have the ability to scrub and wipe with the same sponge.

This sponge also can be used for so many different jobs! I find that mine stays in the kitchen, but you could definitely grab it for other jobs around the house. I like to use it for jobs like:

Scrubbing Sticky spots off counters/floors
Scrubbing sticky spots off dishes
Wiping countertops
Scrubbing, then wiping sticky cupboards (it’s actually AMAZING for this, and is my favourite use for this sponge)
Scrubbing, then wiping down sticky chairs (if you have kids, you WANT THIS)
Absorbing small spills
Scrubbing and/or wiping down the tub
Quick wipe downs of your dirty stove

How it compares to similar products

Ummmmm; I’ve never seen a product like this one! So simply put: it doesn’t compare! The scrubby side of this sponge is like no other ‘scrubby’ sponge. I used it one day to scrub my cupboards, and I couldn’t believe how much old food spills it wiped away. Not to mention sticky blobs. When I was done scrubbing, I simply flipped and wiped it clean. And I only needed water, since the EnviroCloth side removes up to 99% of bacteria from the surface using just water. That alone makes this Sponge the best darn sponge you could ever own! I fell in love instantly! The soft, EnviroCloth side also contains our signature BacLock feature, purifying itself in between uses. So, this is WAY BETTER than any other germ infested sponge!

To clean

Between uses, make sure you’re wringing this out and allowing to air dry. In between uses, you can add a drop of Dish Soap to your sponge, rub it against itself, then rinse the soap out well, under running water, then air dry. These can be thrown in the washing machine (I’ve personally never tried this), or washed in the top rack of the dishwasher. Since the EnviroCloth side is self-purifying in between uses, as it dries, you don’t need to be constantly laundering this baby.

MicroCleaning Hand Pads

Norwex Micro Pad
Package of two
60-day warranty

These are similar to an eraser you may already be familiar with (one that has ‘magical’ qualities). Except that these ones haven’t been bleached! These hand pads aren’t for everyday use – I like to save them for those special, extra tough jobs. They are disposable, so they’re not going to last you super long (hence why you save them for the extra tough jobs). These are tough on stubborn stains, yet less aggressive than an abrasive scrubber. To use, simply moisten with water and rub on the stubborn stain.

Great for:

crayon, marker, pen, scuff marks and soap scum.
Use on: floors, interior doors, trim, baseboard, patio furniture

How it compares to similar products

This is basically exactly the same as similar products, in my experience, except for the fact that you’re avoiding exposure to the bleaching agent that makes other brands white (the Norwex brand is a light blue/gray). But in terms of performance – it performs just the same as other brands (which is very well).

To clean

Since this is a disposable product, it is not washed in between uses. It can be used multiple times, and is disposed of once it has broken down. However, you can make this product last longer in between uses. Since it begins to break down once moistened, simply cut in half’s or fourths, before you use. You only need to use and dispose of the small piece you used on your job, and have more leftover for next time!
Spirinette

These are so handy for tough jobs!
Package of two
60 day warranty

Technically, this isn’t a sponge. But these are popular cleaning tools, and many customers love them (and ask about them). These don’t hold onto water like a sponge would, but you do use them with lots of water. These are reserved for special scrubbing jobs on tough surfaces (as these are very abrasive, and can scratch many surfaces). They can be a bit of a concern, since they can scratch surfaces, but once you have a feel for what they’re safe on, they’re lifesavers! You’ll see, from my list below, that this ‘sponge’ is best friends with the Norwex Cleaning Paste. They love to do everything together!

I like to use these for:

Scrubbing pots and pans (non-teflon)
Scrubbing grout and sticky floor tiles (with the Cleaning Paste)
Scouring the inside of my stainless steel sink with water.
When I want to do a deep clean of my sink, I use this, with water and the Cleaning Paste.
Scouring caked on soap scum or hard water on ceramic tubs (I always use with Cleaning Paste or Blue Diamond Cleaner, for extra scouring power)
Scrubbing the inside of my oven (with lots of water and Cleaning Paste), ESPECIALLY the inside of the oven door window.
Scrubbing hard water build up on drains and the edges of faucets (carefully, so I don’t scratch them).

How it compares to similar products

You can purchase very similar products in stores to this one. They perform the exact same, in my experience, on your tough jobs. Both Norwex and similar brands unravel and stretch as they’re used. But the Norwex Spirinettes are smaller, which means they don’t get super big and stretched out like other brands. I like them for this reason, as they’re easier to fit in my hand. I find that the Norwex brand lasts longer than any other brand I have used as well, which makes them worth the price.

To clean

Add a drop of dishsoap to the wet spirinette. Rub it against itself, then rinse well. You can also throw this in the dishwasher, on the top rack or in the utensils basket. And to be honest – I never actually ‘clean’ this item. I might do the dishsoap thing if there’s bits of food stuck in it, or swish it around in a sink of water, to get those bits out. But other than that, I just use and abuse it until it’s all stretched to the max!
In Summary

Norwex has four sponges to choose from for your tough cleaning jobs. All four are effective at what they do. They all have versatile uses for every room of the home.

If you want to know what one you should DEFINITELY get first, I recommend the Spirisponge, since it’s abrasive, yet doesn’t scratch. This can be used with the Cleaning Paste for many jobs, so if you’re getting the paste, then yes yes yes, get a pack of Spirisponges to go with it!

If you’ve got tough cleaning jobs in the kitchen you want to tackle, especially on pots and pans, or on your ‘always brown’ kitchen sink, get a pack of Spirinette’s to have on hand, as you’ll find yourself reaching for them!

If you are a sponge lover, but are trying to ‘give it up,’ after you’ve heard how bacteria-ridden they are, swap it out for an EnviroSponge. You’ll be so darn happy you did!

And if you’ve got some tricky marks around the house you’ve been wanting to clean up, the MicroHand Pads are where you should start!

Hope these details have helped! To get your hands on one of these sponges, visit my shop at www.healthyhomeshop.com!

Happy Cleaning!

5 Things to do NOW if You Want to Save Money This Holiday Season

Christmas is a lovely and wonderful time of the year. It’s this one event that we basically look forward to all year long. It’s also a holiday that we kind of dread, because of the costs associated with it. And then when we’re in it, we stress over money. And then when it’s done, we are still stressing over money! Avoid that stress this year, and let me help you enjoy this lovely season a whole lot more by following these 5 tips to help you save money this Christmas.
5 Things to do NOW to Save Money This Christmas

1. Decide NOW how much you want to spend and set a budget.

Being specific helps you know when to say ‘No’. To set a realistic budget, you need to sit down (tea or coffee in hand), and make a list of everyONE and everyTHING you want to buy for. Maybe last year you went a little wild, and you want to pull it back this year. If that’s the case, ask yourself: where can you cut back this year? You may need to make these lists in order of priority, as you may discover you don’t have the funds to do everything you want. I’m here to say that’s okay. It’s okay to live within a limit. In fact – that’s the most realistic thing ever! So, list names and ‘stuff’ from most to least important. If you’ve run out of money by the end of the list, you can cut some of the names or items from the very bottom of your lists!

People: Make a list of the friends and family you want to buy for. Then, add the people outside of your inner circle you may also buy for every year. Maybe it’s teachers, bus drivers, accountants, your Norwex consultant, etc.
Things: include items in your budget like: extra groceries and alcohol, new decor, wrapping paper and ribbons, and charitable donations.

The MOST IMPORTANT PART of all of this is this: when you run out of money, stop buying. Yup. I said it. Don’t purchase another thing for Christmas. This is the key to saving money this Christmas!
2. Purchase gifts and extra holiday items with CASH.

Withdraw your budgeted amount, and put it in an old-fashioned envelope. Everytime you make a purchase for the holidays, whether it’s a gift, a donation, or a new Christmas decoration, you pay for it with the cash in your envelope.GASP I know that this is a wild idea, in our day of bank, credit cards, and Apple Pay! But physically seeing that money dwindle inside your envelope helps you to easily keep track of how much you’ve spent, and truly know how much you have left. Plus, as I learned from Dave Ramsay, handing over cash actually hurts! When spending is a little painful, you’re less likely to over do it! But what if you do a lot of online shopping? An easy alternative to this is to purchase a Visa Gift Card for yourself, load it with some of your budgeted money, and use that card for your online purchases. Eventually, it will run out of money, and you can’t keep spending. Budget kept!

Pro Tip for next year: set up automatic monthly transfers, starting in January, into a separate account, for your Christmas budget. If you put aside a little bit NOW, and do it every month, you’ll have accumulated a nice stash of extra cash by next December! You can even throw in bonus money, or extra savings, into that account, throughout the year, to help it grow even more!
3. Make it homemade!

Not all thoughtful gifts have to be purchased. And a homemade gift can give you the control to make items in bulk and create cost savings. I have made bags of homemade caramel corn for people like teachers and associates, and they never stop talking about that gift (homemade caramel corn is the BEST!). I’d say that they appreciate that gesture MORE than a pricey item you don’t even know if they’ll like. Maybe it’s homemade jams and jellies. Or maybe you’re a knitter or an artist or a crafter. Let your creative juices flow (or hit up Pinterest ).
4. Keep it simple.

Don’t worry about elaborate gifts. Sometimes, a simple gift, when it’s given thoughtfully, is the most appreciated. Personally, I love receiving thoughtful cards and practical items I will actually use!
5. Make a list of WHAT you want to buy, and then pay attention to sales.

Why pay full price for items on your shopping list when you can get them on sale? Regularly check the flyers for the items on your kids wishlists. Subscribe to emails from your favourite companies and direct sellers (for example, I’ve been subscribing to Chapters Indigo emails. They recently had a 25% off sale for in-store purchases. I had some items from there I knew I wanted to purchase for my kids, so I hopped into the store and bought the items then, instead of paying full price later). Flash sales offer items at great prices. Be flexible with WHAT you purchase for people and work their item around great flash sales that you see come up (Norwex has great Flash Sales in the fall months, hint hint).

Capitalize on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Pay attention to communication from your favourite direct sellers and stores to nab their Black Friday specials. Make sure that you are either subscribed to their email updates, or that you are a part of their exclusive customer groups, if they have one!

I always like to stock up on my wrapping paper, bows and tags after Christmas, when they’re all marked down after the holiday season. There are HUGE savings to be had by doing it this way. The added benefit to this is that when Christmas rolls around next year, you’re already ready! I love have everything just ‘there’ when it’s time to start wrapping!

WIth these 5 tips, you’re golden. You’re on your way to saving money and making this Christmas season easy-breezy! Thanks for stopping by, and share any additional tips you may have, for my readers, in the comments below!

Liquid Laundry Detergent – A Review

Norwex released a Liquid Laundry detergent in October. I’ve had time to use it for a number of months now, as well as receive customer feedback. I’ve been receiving lots of questions about this product, so I think it’s timely that I share with you what I think of this detergent, what customers are saying, as well as tips for using this Norwex product!
Why a New Liquid detergent?

Norwex already has a very popular, and well-loved, powder laundry detergent. While the Norwex powder detergent is very effective, the fact that it is a powder can be a stopping point for some people, since some washing machines have a liquid dispenser. The powder detergent can get all clumped up and stuck in the dispensing tray. Some users will dilute the powder in a jar of warm water, shake to dissolve, and then add to the tray. However, it’s one more step that needs to happen in the laundry routine, and it’s a bit of an annoyance. So, Norwex worked on creating a liquid option for all the HE machines that work better on liquid! Others don’t love powdered detergent, because it needs to be dissolved in the water first, before adding clothes, to avoid detergent residue left on clothes. A liquid laundry detergent solves this inconvenience!

Check out Norwex's newest member of the laundry family!
The Fancy Features of the Norwex Liquid Laundry Detergent

This liquid detergent uses the power of enzymes for potent effectiveness against tough odours and stains.
You only need a teensy-tiny bit of this ultra concentrated formula! The pump dispenses pre-measured amounts, and you only need 3 pumps for a large load in an HE machine.
Dissolves in a snap, so you won’t get any detergent residue on your clothes
USDA Certified Biobased Product (it’s biodegradable!)
Free from fragrances, phosphates, ammonia, bleach and fillers.
Never tested on animals
Works on all types of fabrics

What I Like About This Product

After using this product for a number of months, I can attest to the fact that it works! In my opinion, it works just as well as the powdered Norwex powder Detergent.
What I (and customers) Don’t Like About This Product

Instructions: Customers who get their hands on this product find that they can’t find instructions for how much detergent you need. There ARE in fact instructions on the bottle. But first, you have to peel back the top corner of the back label to find them. It’s not very obvious that this is an option, so I’ve had some frustrated customers when they first receive it.
The instructions are as follows:

For an HE Washer– Small loads: 1 pump Medium loads: 2 pumps Large Loads: 3 pumps

For a Standard Washer – Small loads: 2 pumps Medium loads: 3 pumps Large loads: 5 pumps

Cost Effectiveness: While this liquid detergent proves to be even more cost effective than the Norwex Powder Laundry Detergent in an HE washing machine (will wash 215 small loads for only $0.16 cents/load), it doesn’t seem to be the same in a non-HE machine. I have a customer that has a top loading, non-HE machine. A full load in a non-HE machine requires 5 pumps from the bottle. In her family of four, her liquid detergent lasted a little over a month. When using powder detergent, she can get two months out of it. Since the liquid detergent costs more than the powdered detergent, it wasn’t a savings for her.

Versatility: those that have the powder detergent in their laundry room know how versatile this detergent is. Whether it’s diluting it in a spray bottle with water to treat stains on clothes, rugs or furniture, or to wipe down greasy cupboards, or to deep clean their microfiber cloths, the liquid detergent lacks this ability to be versatile. No one knows for sure if the liquid detergent works as well in that capacity. Perhaps time will tell us differently, but for now, it only works in the washing machine.

Sour Smelling Laundry: Some users (but not all), are having issues with experiencing a sour smell in their laundry when using the liquid detergent. It seems to depend on water type, washing machine, etc. This hasn’t been an issue for me, in my top loader. Customers and consultants are finding that some adjustments need to be made to avoid this sour smell. Here are a few tips if you have experienced this issue:

Reduce the amount of detergent you are using, by at least 1 pump.
Adjust your water temperature. So, if you’ve been washing with cold, try warm. If you’ve been washing in warm, wash in cold, etc.

Conclusion

You are going to love this detergent if you dislike powder detergent. You’ll also love the cost effectiveness of this product if you have an HE machine, as well as how long it lasts before you need to buy more.

If you have a non-HE machine, you’ll be disappointed at how quickly you go through it, and you won’t find as much value for your money. You’ll want to stick to the powder, if you have a non-HE machine.

If you currently use powder Norwex Laundry Detergent, and utilize its versatility around the home, you won’t want to make the switch to the liquid (at least not yet).

While both detergents are effective, I personally love everything about the Norwex Powder Detergent, and highly recommend it as the top choice. It’s currently my favourite of the two detergents Norwex offers.
I give the Norwex Liquid Laundry Detergent 4 stars!

Let me know in the comments which detergent you would choose, and if you think I’m crazy for not loving the liquid detergent.
Have fun with all your laundry!

Norwex Peppermint Foaming Hand Soap – Review

Peach Bellini – Black Cherry Merlot – Warm Vanilla Sugar – Sunshine and Lemons….

Just a few delectable sounding fragrances to lather our hands with, right?

Dangers of antibacterial soap

We all love the delicious smelling foam soaps from Bath & Body works. Their smells momentarily bring us to our happy place. However, as appealing as their smell is, their antibacterial quality does not appeal to me!

Antibacterial soaps contain Triclosan. As talked about in an earlier post, triclosan has been in the news a lot recently and its safety is being put to the test.

Since this hormone disruptor is not necessary for keeping us clean and healthy, I prefer to stay away from it and avoid sending it into our water systems, where it is affecting life cycles and the well being of our water loving life forms.

Therefore, I buy simple soap.

Norwex Peppermint Hand Soap

The Norwex Foam Soap is a simple soap. The list of items that it does NOT contain is extensive!

No: Parabens, synthetic dyes or frangrances, phthalates, PEGS, petroleum-derived ingredients, animal -derived ingredients.

Norwex describes the ingredients as such: “Natural surfactants derived from coconut and apple extracts combine to thoroughly cleanse hands, while Panthenol and Aloe leave them smooth and moisturized.”

What instantly struck me when using this soap was its ‘clean’ smell. While peppermint can seem like a strange choice in smell, it has a very refreshing and revitalizing ‘zing’ to it!

What goes onto our skin can be absorbed into our bodies. So we’re not just talking about the well-being of the outside, but also, the inside of our bodies! Sometimes, it can be a little overwhelming, considering what chemicals we’re always exposed to. But choosing which soap to use at home is one small choice I can make to reduce what we’re all exposed to.

I really like the Norwex Foaming Soap’s overall revitalizing smell and I really like that it is not a harmful soap, so I’m giving it 5 stars!

The BEST Indian Butter Chicken Recipe

Yes, this is a recipe!

This is not a post about a Norwex product (although, the Norwex Kitchen Cloths or the All Purpose Kitchen cloth will come in very handy to clean up the messes and spills while making this it).

This recipe is fast enough for a quick-after-hockey-practice meal, but delicious and beautiful enough to serve when you have guests for supper. It will quickly become part of your regular recipe rotation; even your kids will like it (perhaps even LOOOOVE it, as mine do)!
Indian Butter Chicken Recipe

Indian Butter Chicken

This recipe is super simple to make, and quite fast. It’s especially quick if you use a pre-roasted rotisserie chicken from your grocery store.

It also doubles or triples brilliantly, so you can make enough to feed a large group. Or your pre-teen/teenaage son, who will eat all of the leftovers. All. Of. It. There are no leftovers in this family.

You can make this as mild or spicy as you like.

Oh, and did I mention that this meal is gluten free? Well it is!

Melted Butter for Butter Chicken

To start, melt 2-3 Tbsp of butter (not margarine) in a 10-12 inch skillet over medium heat.

Butter Chicken

Prepare the onion (1 chopped), gingerroot (2-3 Tbsp fresh & grated), garlic (2-4 minced cloves) and spices (2-3 tsp chili powder, 2 tsp ground turmeric, 1-2 tsp ground cumin, 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon & 1-2 tsp ground coriander).

Onions for the Butter Chicken

Once the butter is melted, add the onion and saute until they’re nice and soft and a little translucent.

Blend the tomatoes

While the onions are becoming yummy, prepare the tomatoes.

This step is entirely unnecessary for lovers of tomato chunks. But if your kids HATE… errr…. really don’t appreciate finding large, chewy pieces of tomato in any sauce, this is a great solution. Using a hand blender, eliminate the chunks.

Add the grated gingerroot and minced garlic

When the onions are cooked, add the grated gingerroot & minced garlic to the pan. Stir, and cook for a couple minutes. Be prepared, the ginger will stick to the pan.

Add spices to the butter chicken

Mix in the chili powder, turmeric, cumin & coriander.

If your tomatoes are really runny, this is where you would add 1-2 Tbsp of tomato paste. The brand I use are thick (which are a plum variety), so I never use the paste.

NOTE: Many people make the mistake of adding their tomato paste to the sauce after the canned tomatoes have been added; tomato paste should ALWAYS be sauteed BEFORE adding the diced tomatoes. This eliminates the tinny, metallic taste that accompanies paste.

Adding the tomatoes to butter chicken

Add the tomatoes and stir them in.

Add brown sugar, salt and pepper

Stir in the salt & pepper and brown sugar.

Cover your sauce and let it simmer, on low, for 10-20 minutes, or until you’re almost ready to eat. You really can’t over-simmer this, so if it sits, simmering for 30-40-50-60 minutes., it will still be just as tasty.

Chopped chicken for the butter chicken

Meanwhile… get your cooked chicken de-boned and cut into bite sized pieces. You can either use a store bought, pre-roasted bird, or you can cook up some chicken you already have. You can also add as much or as little meat as you want. There are no rules folks.

Cream and yogurt for the butter chicken

Measure out your cream (2/3 cup) and yogurt or sour cream (1/2 cup)… or don’t measure. I just wing it.

Stir in the cream & yogurt (or sour cream)

Add the chicken to the sauce

JUST before serving, mix in the cream & yogurt and stir in the chicken. Heat through, but don’t simmer it or the yogurt and cream will separate.

Serve butter chicken over hot basmati rice.

Once it’s hot, serve the Butter Chicken sauce over basmati rice, with fresh, chopped cilantro and a little balkan styled yogurt.

Be prepared to over-eat. Git yer eatin’ pants on people!

Indian Butter Chicken
Author: Mildly adapted from the cookbook, "Eat, Shrink & Be Merry!"
Recipe type: Main
Cuisine: Indian
Serves: 6 generously, 8 moderately

Delicious & easy Indian Butter Chicken that even kids love. This is easy enough for an every-day supper but fancy enough for company.
Ingredients

2 Tbsp butter
1 large onion, chopped
2-3 cloves garlic, minced
2 Tbsp grated fresh gingerroot
2-3 tsp chili powder
2 tsp ground turmeric
1-2 tsp ground cumin (cumin seed is also very nice added to this)
½ tsp ground cinnamon
1-2 tsp ground coriander
1 796ml/28 fl oz can of undrained tomatoes. These can be diced or whole
2 Tbsp tomato paste (optional)
1-2 Tbsp brown sugar
1 tsp salt
½ tsp freshly ground black pepper (6-7 grinds)
1 whole rotisserie chicken, skin removed, chopped into bite sized pieces. Or chicken breast or thighs that are already cooked
⅔ cup 10% cream (or 5% if you're trying to cut calories!)
½ cup plain, balkan style yogurt OR sour cream
Fresh, minced cilantro

Instructions

Melt butter in a deep 10-12 inch frying pan or skillet over medium heat.
Add onions and cook slowly, stirring often, until they are tender and translucent.
While onions are cooking prepare the can of tomatoes (for the picky eaters in your family), by lightly blending with a hand blender, or mashing with a potato masher, eliminating as many chunks as possible.
Add garlic & gingerroot to the onions and saute for 1-2 minutes.
Stir in the chili powder, turmeric, cumin, cinnamon & coriander - Cook one more minute.
Pour in the can of tomatoes, whole, diced or blended... whatever floats your boat.
Stir in brown sugar, salt. pepper and tomato paste (if your sauce is too runny... I don't usually use the paste, but the tomatoes I use are quite hearty and meaty.
Cover, reduce heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes.
Just before serving, add the cream & yogurt (or sour cream) and stir until fully incorporated. Heat until hot, but do not simmer or the yogurt will separate.
Add the chicken to the sauce and heat through.
Serve over hot basmati rice with cilantro to top.

Raisin Bran Muffin Recipe

It’s a coffee & muffin sort of day.

I love muffins, especially on cold, house bound days. If I could, I would eat a feast of muffins, every day.

Unfortunately, eating too many muffins contributes to my own personal “muffin top” growing bigger, and that’s not good at all. So, in order to make me feel better about my muffin habit, I do my best to bake healthy muffins… and then I eat 4 of them. In one sitting.

This Raisin Bran Muffin recipe fits the bill perfectly. They are simple to make, but oh so moist, delicious, AND healthy.

Raisin Bran Muffin Recipe

Muffins are always better with butter, and a cup of coffee or tea.

Best Raisin Bran Muffin Recipe
Want Marvelous Muffins? Here are a few tips:

The most important rule of muffin-making is DON’T over-mix your batter. Unless, of course, you want tough, chewy hockey pucks. You want to mix them until the ingredients are barely incorporated, and your dry ingredients have been just moistened. Your batter should still be lumpy.
Use room temperature ingredients.
Instead of using an electric mixer (like your Kitchen Aid), opt for an old fashioned wooden spoon to stir your batter – you’ll be much less likely to over mix it.
Position your oven rack in the middle of your oven.
Practice makes perfect. If at first you don’t succeed, just make another batch!

Raisin Bran Muffin Recipe
Author: Suzanne Holt
Serves: 12 muffins

Healthy, moist, and DELICIOUS! Even your kids will love them.
Ingredients

1 cup flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
2 cups natural bran
½ cup raisins
1 cup milk
⅓ cup molasses
¼ cup sugar
1 egg, lightly beaten
2 Tbsp oil
2-3 Tbsp unsweetened applesauce (optional, but it helps the muffins stay moist longer!)

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350°F, and grease or line a 12 cup muffin pan. (Parchment paper liners are my fav!)
In a large bowl, combine flour, soda, and salt. Mix well.
Add the bran, and the raisins, breaking up raisin clumps.
In a medium bowl, combine milk,, molasses, sugar, egg, oil, and applesauce.
Pour the wet into the dry, and gently mix using a spoon - don't use electric mixer. Stir until the ingredients are barely incorporated, and the batter is still lumpy.
Spoon batter into prepared muffin cups, to about ⅔ full. You should get an even dozen.
Bake 18-20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in a center muffin comes out clean.
Do NOT overbake.

Make them, eat them, share them, and let me know what you think!
