In a mostly symbolic and extremely split vote,Republicans won out over Democrats and antipoverty groups in a congressional panel vote which approved approximately $33 billion in cuts over 10 years fromfood stamp programs. Although many expect the cuts to not pass the Democratic-controlled senate, the vote does indicate that Republicans are have ignored studies showing how food stamps have been essential to efforts to eliminate poverty and the needs of low-income families.
