Hooray! I finally got my Unicomp UB40B5A (122-key terminal layout Model-M spec USB keyboard, aka the Keyboard of Doom) working properly without disconnects or freezes.
Introducing it to the higher-amperage USB2 port on my new computer's motherboard (the kind that delivers 2-5A instead of 1.5A for the benefit of faster-charging cellphones) did the trick.
...and there was much rejoicing.

Follow-up: I'm a sad panda. The keyboard stopped talking to my system at some point during the night last night and had to be replugged. At least I made it over 24h this time.Mar 6, 2014
