Be prepared for a layoff, because no job is "permanent"
And even great employees -- top performers -- get laid off when downsizing happens. Layoffs are not necessarily logical or rational. So, don't every assume you are safe!

Job Search in a New Location

As usual, your network is the key to a successful job search. Here's how to build your local network when you are new to an area -- or when you are planning to move to a new area.
A job seeker recently described a problem that many of us have had, finding a job in a new location far from “home” and her network. Not too surprisingly, she was having difficulty even landing job interviews, much less a new job.

Job Search Numbers Game

It may be a numbers game, but maybe not the way you think...
A successful job search is not a simple “numbers game” that you can win by applying for jobs endlessly. Simply submitting as many resumes as possible does not work. A different version of the numbers game provides greater opportunities for success, however.

To be hired, you must be reachable!

Here's where and how to publish appropriate contact information for you so employers and recruiters can reach you to start the hiring process.

Being find-able by employers and recruiters is essential for a successful job search. But, once you have been found, they must be able to contact you to see if you are available and schedule an interview.
A key aspect of being hired, once you have been found, is to have information easily available that allows employers and recruiters to contact you. Having an online profile that attracts employers and recruiters is critical to a successful job search. But, the best profile will be useless to you ...

Ace this job interview question AND improve your resume, too!

Knowing and being able to describe your accomplishments are key to a successful LinkedIn profile, resumes, and -- of course -- job interviews.
This question may also be phrased as “What’s your greatest achievement?” and sometimes they may want more than one accomplishment/achievement. So, be prepared for “What are your 2 (or 3 or more) greatest accomplishments?”The Extra Benefit of Preparing Your AnswerPreparing your answer for this job interview question should help you improve the effectiveness of your resumes and LinkedIn profile, too.Your LinkedIn profile and the resumes you submit ...

Online Job Search Expert, Boomer, Veteran
Introduction
I'm an online job search expert (having studied it for over 15 years), author, Boomer, veteran (USMC), laid off twice. In 1995, I founded NETability, Inc. after my second layoff.

As someone who has been through 2 layoffs plus several voluntary career changes in my 30+ years of work, I am passionate about helping job seekers understand how to successfully find new jobs. My background in military intelligence, HR, and compensation consulting plus a few years as a programmer and nearly 20 years as a web developer have given me a relatively unique perspective, particularly about online job search.

I also manage the Job-Hunt Help LinkedIn Group, speak about online job search at conferences and job clubs, am a Visiting Scholar at the MIT Sloan School of Management, and am also planning to write more books about smart job search.
