We took the day off last Thursday to do a long-anticipated run around Mt St Helens on the Loowit Trail. It was tougher than we thought it would be and took us 12 1/2 hours-- only stopping twice to fill up on water-- for about 34 miles.  We saw Mt Hood, Adams and Rainier, the black outline of volcanic activity surrounding Mt St Helens from pristine forest, lots of mountain goats, a few too many washouts, and about 25% of a deer.

View of the mountain and the Toutle River from a scree switchback We completed the Loowit trail, 34 miles circumnavigating the volcanic lands and forests surrounding the squat, smoldering Mt St. Helens. It was amazing, but ...

Post Canyon in Hood River-- an amazing park for mountain bikers, but also for trail runners.
On Saturday, November 1, Ann's dad, Fred, turned 70 and we celebrated with a big party in Hood River. Many of us stayed the night or weekend in town, including Ann's stepsister Gretchen and stepbrother Noel-- both of whom tra...

A breathtakingly scenic run on the Oregon Coast Trail, from Arch Cape to Neahkahnie Mountain.
My family was due for a weekend in Manzanita. Coincidentally, Ann's husband, John, wanted to check on his land nearby. It was the perfect opportunity for a shorter run along the coast! Usually when I'm there I run a 10 mile o...

A wild run in New Zealand, fresh off the plane.
I arrived in New Zealand early Monday morning. Ann & John picked me up, we returned to the hotel, I freshened up, and then it was time for a run!  Piha beach panorama Ann picked one about an hour west of Auckland, on the coa...

Running on the Oregon coast in January.
I spent the first weekend of the new year with family, in Manzanita on the Oregon coast. It was gorgeously sunny, with attendant cold temperatures. I had planned to run 15 miles on my own while Ann was up in Seattle, but once...

At last! After four months of mulling over one of the greatest adventures of my life, here is the story of how Ann & I attempted to circumnavigate Mt Hood.

This race (and afterparty featuring custom, wood-fired pizza, beer, and a giant slip & slide) was awesome!

Summer adventure run from July.
Mt St Helens from Ape Canyon Trail When a coworker described the Mt St Helens trail loop she had just spent the weekend hiking as "great for a run," my interest piqued. I told Ann about it and we searched diligently, findin...

Running with coyotes and hawks in Forest Park.
Animal Athletics, the coolest runners in town, put on a series of group runs called the Forest Park Nasty Series. Not only do they promise to traverse less-traveled trail with all the extra elevation gain you need for good tr...

A new favorite, less-traveled route in Forest Par.k
"We are going to meet at FL1 on hwy 30 behind la quinta" began the subject line of Ann's email. I'm not sure why, but I wasn't surprised. I had suspected we would start from that odd trailhead in its junky, industrial locatio...

The mean things runners do to each other.
After Ann's little surprise for me-- my least favorite uphill trail at the end of 23 miles-- I decided to return the favor. Ann tries to kick BPA away  Ann's least favorite trail is BPA, and it's easy to see why. From Wildwoo...

Dr Jenna and her team are amazing. They are so kind, friendly and patient, and the facility is beautiful, clean, and obvious created with kids as the top priority. My son is so excited to go that he talks about it for a week beforehand, and then it's tough to get him to leave. I wish my dentist was this awesome. They really make the whole experience safe, comfortable and fun.

The owner is helpful and not pushy at all. She has every size ever-- including ones I didn't think existed, and in styles and colors that are actually cute, not just utility. I am so thankful for this shop.
