In many ways we're already a socialist society, it's just to what level it's allowed to reach. "Socialism" isn't a bad thing, the word has just been hijacked by the media and certain political groups and it's meaning has been distorted. These groups have associated it with the components of communism, and changed it's overall meaning. As for the division of the population, this is a result of the blatant manipulation of the population by politics and media.
“There is nothing which I dread so much as a division of the republic into two great parties, each arranged under its leader, and concerting measures in opposition to each other. This, in my humble apprehension, is to be dreaded as the greatest political evil under our Constitution.”
― John Adams, The Works Of John Adams, Second President of the USA
“If political authority is not limited, the division of powers, ordinarily the guarantee of freedom, becomes a danger and a scourge.”
― Benjamin Constant, Principles of Politics Applicable to All Governments
As a populace we have allowed ourselves to become distracted and willingly manipulated into the politics of division and conflict. Reconciliation is extremely difficult in this environment, if not impossible for some. Throughout history we have followed the same pattern, typically (if not completely) leading to the end of an empire.
The collapse of an empire has always let to periods of extreme difficulty and conflict, and eventual reconciliation. However this takes a long time, usually a generational change. This cycle has repeated itself numerous times and will continue to do so, regardless of the political structure and type of governance.
However, you can protect yourself from this repeating cycle and even do well when this does inevitably occur. That is by being both physically AND mentally prepared.
