Where are visitor centers on the scenic Lake Superior Circle Drive?
Brian who is traveling counter-clockwise from Sault Ste. Marie asked me this recently. Here's my reply:
The Sault Ste Marie Ontario visitor center is just a few blocks from when you cross the bridge. Canada Customs is also there. Watch signs carefully as you cross and you should find it. Make effort to find it, especially if you are staying in Canada for a few days as they sometimes have coupons for places to stay and visitor attractions. Also pick up a good road map and brochures for other things of interest.
When you come into Minnesota at Grand Portage, the Minnesota Visitor Center is now part of the Visitor Center at Grand Portage State Park on your right hand side about a half mile from the border. Again watch for signs and you shouldn't miss it. Before you get there stop at the Grand Portage State Park to see the waterfalls. Usually quite impressive.Your park sticker is good for the day for all state parks along the North Shore - many of them worth a stop for hiking and scenery.
When you cross the bridge from Duluth to Superior, WI you go all the way through the city of Superior and east on Hwy 2 a few miles beyond the city limits. The Wisconsin Welcome Center is on your right hand side and hard to miss. When you cross from Hurley, WI to Ironwood, Michigan the Michigan Visitor Center is on your right hand side as you come into Ironwood. Watch carefully as you cross the state line as this one is a bit easier to miss.
