Meet our resident, Jack. Jack returned to Fairfield recently after being away most of his adult life. Jack was born in Fairfield, graduated from Fairfield High School and attended Fairfield’s Parsons College. Jack is pictured looking at the M.U.M. campus map and pointing to the building where he took most of his classes. Jack said “if those old buildings could talk they would tell a great story.”

We have been busy beautifying our community with bright and cheery flowers. To top off our week of planting, The Knights of Columbus from St. Mary’s Parish in Fairfield, donated beautiful flower baskets to us yesterday. Knight’s members Tony Webb and Ken Malloy are pictured with our Executive Director Brandi Logli and some of the beautiful hanging baskets that now decorate the exterior of our building. Thank you Knights for your generosity!

Exercise is an important part of physical and mental health at any age! In addition to keeping your bones, muscles and heart strong, exercise also triggers the release of chemicals in the brain called endorphins, which can help improve mood and promote a sense of well-being. Doris stays active riding her three wheel bike on our quarter mile sidewalk surrounding the building and exploring the surrounding neighborhoods. We encourage those who can to walk in the halls or outside and to attend our daily exercise class and twice monthly Tai Chi class. The U.S. Surgeon General reports that inactivity can lead to more doctor visits and hospitalizations. Furthermore, those who are inactive are nearly twice as likely to develop heart disease. To stay healthy, no matter what your age, start and keep moving!

We had a great turn out for our Mother’s Day Dessert Party! We had overflowing tables filled with friends, family and delicious desserts prepared by our fabulous kitchen. There was a mouthwatering selection of mini cheese cakes, chocolate eclairs, lemon cookies and cupcakes.

During National Nurses Week we want to salute our Health Services Director, Sandra Vice, RN. She has a lot of residents to look after and she does an excellent job of caring for every single one of them!  We gave her a mug that sums up what we think of her and all nurses, it says… I am a Nurse, what’s your Superpower. Thank you Sandra for all you do for our residents!

As we begin to celebrate Nurses Week and acknowledge the wonderful contribution nurses make every day of the year, we want to recognize one of our residents who had a career in nursing, Doris Nordyke.  Doris attended Mercy Nursing School in Burlington and graduated top of her class. She worked as a nurse part-time in Fairfield at the Jefferson County Hospital, because farming kept her and her husband Kenneth busy, and she was the first Hospice nurse in Jefferson County. You're a superstar, Doris!

Today is International Firefighters’ Day and we want to recognize the City of Fairfield Fire Department for keep our city and county safe. We have the pleasure of having the former Assistant Fire Chief Bud Dimmitt living with us. Pictured is Bud with the current Fire Chief and some of the other guys. On Bud and Erma’s apartment door they have a sign that reads “A Fireman lives here with his old flame”!
