Cleaning Oil from Carpets
No matter what kind of carpet is in your home or business, motor oil not treated promptly and properly will become a permanent stain. The type of carpet dictates the cleaning solution to be used. Before making a cleaning solution decision, check the recommendation of the manufacturer.
Steps to Take on Your Own
1. Puddled oil can be scooped up with a plastic spoon and disposed of promptly. If the oil is dry, using a hand-vac for lifting the residue may be helpful. Full-sized vacuums can spread the stain.
2. Rubbing a stain will always make it worse. Fold one or two paper towels into a square. Use a lifting motion and blot the oil stain. Always work from the outside of the stain toward the center.
3. Repeat Step 2 until no oil is absorbed by the paper toweling.
4. Apply a cleaning solution in a small amount to a washcloth. Synthetic fibers can be cleaned with rubbing alcohol. A mild liquid grease-cutting soap mixed with water can be used on Oriental rugs. Wool fibers can be cleaned with an aerosol cleaner used for brake parts, followed by a dry cleaning fluid.
5. On an inconspicuous area of the carpet, test the cleaning solution to see if it will stain or fade the carpet.
6. Blot the washcloth in the same manner used with the paper towels.
7. Repeat the process until the washcloth no longer absorbs the residue or the stain is gone.
8. Apply a little amount of the cleaning solution directly to any that remains. Let stand no more than five minutes. Use white, dry paper towels until the stain is gone and the moisture is absorbed.
9. Cover the stain with a paper towel stack or clean cloth. Place some heavy weight such as large books over the area.
10. Let any remaining liquid absorb for several hours.
11. Remove the weights and fabric and let the area air dry.
12. After the spot is completely dry, vacuum to pick up any residue from the cleaning solution and restore the carpet’s texture.
13. If the above steps fail to remove the stain, call a professional carpet cleaner.
Should you choose to deep clean carpets, using a rented machine, do not over saturate carpeting. Provide adequate ventilation. Fans can be used to disperse cleaning solution odors. It is highly recommended that silk and wool carpets have stains removed professionally. These delicate carpets may not be fade resistant. The specialists will be familiar with these types of rugs.
Whether you choose to have oil stains removed by professionals or to attempt removal yourself, allow the carpet to dry completely before walking on it. Wet carpet attracts dirt. The stain may end up being bigger than when the task began. Twelve hours are recommended.
