West Indian Manatees (aka "Sea Cows") are large, gray aquatic mammals with bodies that taper to a flat, paddle-shaped tail. The average adult manatee is about 10 feet long and weighs between 800 and 1,200 pounds; however, they are gentle and slow-moving animals. They are mostly herbivorous, however small fish and invertebrates can sometimes be ingested along with a manatee’s normal vegetation diet. Because they are mammals, they must surface to breathe air, although they can stay submerged for up to 20 minutes.
A trip to Florida would not be complete without a stop to visit the manatees (check below for best months to visit). If you are planning a Florida vacation, here are some of the best places to see manatees:
Three Sisters Springs, Crystal River
Virtual Tour: http://gplus.ly/29MBhNk
With a constant 72 degree Fahrenheit water temperature providing essential warm water refuge for the manatees that aggregate there in the winter months, Three Sisters Springs provides visitors with exceptional opportunities to view these majestic mermaids. Last winter, the cold weather drove nearly 500 manatees into Three Sisters Springs for thermal refuge
Note: Three Sisters Springs is currently closed until November 15, 2016 for a critical restoration project.
Blue Spring State Park, Orange City

Blue Spring State Park is a designated manatee refuge and the winter home to a growing population of West Indian Manatees. During manatee season, which runs from mid-November through March, several hundred manatee can be viewed atop the spring’s overlooks on cold days. Swimming or diving with manatees is not permitted; this rule is strictly enforced; however, the spring´s crystal clear, 73-degree water can be enjoyed by swimmers, snorkelers, and certified scuba divers with a partner during our designated swimming season. Fishing, canoeing, and boating are also enjoyed along the St. John’s River. River boat tours are available.
_Note: Blue Spring State Park frequently reaches capacity during the week and on the weekends, during both the winter and summer. To avoid waits, visit the park early.
TECO Manatee Viewing Center, Apollo Beach

The Big Bend Power Station in Apollo Beach delivered reliable electricity to the community for 16 years before the commercial operation of Big Bend Unit 4 in 1986. That year, people started seeing manatees in large numbers in the power station's discharge canal, where saltwater – taken from Tampa Bay to cool Unit 4 – flowed, clean and warm, back to the bay. When Tampa Bay reached 68 degrees or colder, the mammals would seek out this new refuge. The Manatee Viewing Center was soon born. Today, Big Bend's discharge canal is a state and federally designated manatee sanctuary that provides critical protection from the cold for these unique, gentle animals.
Note: Nov. 1 through April 15
Lee County Manatee Park, Fort Myers
Web Page: http://gplus.ly/29MBOyP
Manatee Park is a non-captive warm water refuge for the Florida Manatee. Optimum viewing months are late December, January and February when the gulf temperature is below 68F. The park has an extensive butterfly garden and birds and other wildlife can be found throughout the park. Amenities include restrooms, playgrounds, a Live Oak amphitheater, Chickee Hut, a pavilion, shelters, and a picnic area. Fishing enthusiasts can enjoy the fishing pier on the Orange River. Bring your canoe/kayak, and launch to the Orange River for fun and exploration.
Note: Manatees are generally not present during the warm summer months.
Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Titusville
Manatee Brochure: http://gplus.ly/29MD84M
The refuge provides a range of habitats, from saltwater estuaries and freshwater impoundments and marshes, to dunes, hardwood hammocks, and scrub. Located on the northeast side of Haulover Canal, the Manatee Observation Deck overlooks an area that is frequented by manatees.
Note: As many as 42 manatees have been seen here during spring months, however use of the area by manatees varies.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and local law enforcement officers can all cite you for breaking state or federal manatee protection laws. Manatees are protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972, the Endangered Species Act of 1973 and the Florida Manatee Sanctuary Act of 1978. It is illegal to feed, harass, harm, pursue, hunt, shoot, wound, kill, annoy or molest manatees.
