New course for 2014!  Strawbuild's Bee Rowan is currently in Pakistan, working on an international project to help people use the ultimate local, natural low-cost material - earth - to build in flood affected areas in which lime plays a key role in stabilisation.

This course has developed from this work with UK lime expert Stafford Holmes, author of Building with Lime. Sign up if you want to learn more about the fantastic and versatile material that is lime!

If you get the chance to visit Laboa for natural building or permaculture, it's a beautiful place! We're pleased to call Stefano a friend.
This was the first straw bale house built in Italy. It's a timber frame infill with clay plasters on the inside and lime plaster on the exterior and earthen floors. It was built in 2006 by Stefano Soldati www.naturalhomes.org/timeline/laboa-strawbale.htm

The beautiful "Footprint" project, built for the National Trust by Bee Rowan of Strawbuild and Barbara Jones under the (now defunct) Amazonails banner. A truly inspirational building, combining many natural building materials and techniques. There's a nice article on the natural homes site: http://www.naturalhomes.org/timeline/straw-footprint.htm
This is the UK National Trust’s first straw bale building [pinit via www.naturalhomes.org/timeline/straw-footprint.htm]. It’s near Windermere in the Lake District National Park. The building is called footprint to emphasise the low CO2 footprint of its construction. The straw bale part of the building was by Amazonails, now www.strawworks.co.uk and www.strawbuild.org.

Photos from an insulating straw bale wrap of an existing building at Schumacher College in Devon. This was run as a strawbale building course with some lovely participants! The bales were pinned and strapped in place, covered with clay slip, and clad with timber for weather-proofing.
