We spent the last two days (nights) to replace the broken controller for our Mensadisplay at the Stratum 0 hacker space.
The display has 480x70 pixels in different colors. The original system was based on a DOS PC and some custom boards connected to the parallel port. Rather than trying to repair it, we rebuilt it from scratch.
We have replaced it with an +OLIMEX
olinuxino nano (i.MX 23) and some bus drivers connected to the LCD outputs. It turns out that you can generate the correct signal by setting the display timings just right. We used Linux 3.14 and didn't need any kernel the patches for this board.
For drawing, we built some C and Python tools and connected them using ZeroMQ. This way, members of the space can easily use the display to try new things.
Altogether we spent about 30 hours over two days on this. Thanks to Daniel and Drahflow!
