Depending on the size and population of the geographical area that you live in, signing up for an online auction service for your storage units could greatly benefit you, or it might not doing anything at all for you. Obviously if your area doesn't have a big population there won't be a lot of people searching online for storage auctions anyways. If you live in an area that has 100's of thousands of people in a relatively small radius then putting your storage facility up for an online auctions can help you get rid of the unit and open it up to be available to rent again.

Somethings that have been listed on Inside Self-Storage regarding things to look for include, first asking if the storage auction website requires the end user to create an online account and forces them to record a credit card number. If so, this would be deterring potential buyers from possibly bidding on one of your units. It's nice to be able to show the units available to bid on without having to create an account. Also it's important to beware of the fees of the self storage facility. They might charge a "buyers premium fee" or a "deposit fee" or "listing fee" they can be named all kinds of different fees, but it's important to know what fees you will be charged and what fees the end user would be charged as well. Lots of fees can greatly deter the buyer from bidding on your storage unit. Along with the normal fees, pay attention to the "cancellation policy" alot of online auction websites will charge a "Cancelation fee" if you start the auction but then decide to cancel it (maybe the renter ends up paying their bill)

All in all, it just comes down to paying attention to the details. It might be a great move or it might be smart to just continue to do auctions through a different avenue. After all, "One mans junk is another mans treasure"

Is Breaking in Too Easy?
Go to google and type in storage unit news and see what comes up. Guaranteed there will be a few stories that talk about thieves breaking in and stealing thousands of dollars worth of stuff. Are we making it too easy for thieves to break in and steel stuff? One of the biggest issues has to do with the kind of lock that you put on your unit. Click here to read more.

Everybody has a different personality, there are those people with personalities that like to try and do everything themselves, then there are those who like to ask for help on everything because they don't want to mess anything up. Both are great traits to have but can also be negative traits as well. There has to be a balance as a manager because too much of one thing could be bad.

For example if someone never asked for assistance they could make poor decisions when a difficult situation arises that could potentially cause unseen damage down the road. On the other hand if someone is always asking for assistance, they could annoy tenants, and the owner.
