Safety Matters to Stocks and Taylor

Construction safety can be divided into three areas, the plan, the procedures and the culture.  Most construction sites have an operational plan designed to create a safe working environment.  Safety begins in the planning stages, before materials and equipment are brought on site. The goal is to limit the safety risk.  Once the plan has been drawn up, contractors develop procedures to ensure safety.  The construction management team can use innovative strategies to mitigate the risk.  Safety issues do not end with limiting risks.

The culture of the site must reflect a commitment to safety.  A recent article from the Harvard Chan School of Health discusses how to integrate these three elements.  The focus is communication.  Commercial construction managers gather data regarding safety throughout the construction process.  The study, developed by Emily Sparer, encouraged all managers and all subcontractors to share this information directly with the workers.  At the end of the month, the areas with the highest safety ratings received a free lunch.  At sites where this information was shared and incentives were introduced, workers felt more involved and the focus on safety created a culture of safety.  While the studies were not of significant volume or length to draw conclusions about safety, the culture of the site changed, the focus on safety was created.  The work was completed and there were no injuries.

At Stocks and Taylor, safety is a chief concern.  Our focus is safety and quality.  We provide quality construction in a safe working environment.
