We've seen companies buy patents, not to make products, but to prevent other companies from manufacturing them or to shake them down for licensing fees. I'd bet dollars to Donuts that this will happen with the expanded Internet world of gTLDs, too.
I agree withIf your business has a valuable domain name, all the new top level domain are going to do for you is to bring you potentially expensive headaches.
People don't type in URLs, they Google. tumblr isn't a success because of the domain name, domain names can go away, most people wouldn't notice, Google, Yahoo, Bing, they are the Verisign of the next decade.
