The Greatest Advice For Science Fiction Writers: "Ask The Next Question"
Theodore Sturgeon, who would have turned 97 today, was one of the all-time great science fiction writers. And he came up with a great maxim that defines much of what SF authors do to make their work extraordinary: "Ask the next question." Some current authors explain how this maxim shapes everything they do.

Trainees: My experience treating recruits in the Army medical system
I wrote this in 2000.  I believe it was published in 2001 in the Fort Leonard Wood base newspaper.  I can only hope that things have changed since then. We treat them like shit, you know.  It's not often consciously thought about - the way we treat those t...
We treat them like shit, you know. It's not often consciously thought about - the way we treat those trainees who aren't going to make it, even though we've all seen them, we've all dealt with them. In my nearly three years here, I've seen a lot of them. I am a nuclear medicine technologist, ...

Blood Bowl, Hansel & Gretel, and Knights of Badassdom: Bloody fun stuff
This last weekend (what with all the snow and such) meant I had a lot of time.  I decided to spend some of it with Blood Bowl and so-bad-they're-good movies. First, Blood Bowl .  Blood Bowl is pretty much the only sports game I've ever been interested in.  ...

An experience four years ago was great. This time was a comedy of errors. You initially have to leave a voicemail. They didn't call back after initial contact for over 18 hours. I specified to ONLY contact me in the afternoon. When they called back (in the morning) they couldn't give me an appointment for a week... then called back three days later at 8am saying they were on the way over. I had to remind them of their own appointment time. And then they didn't show up at the scheduled appointment time, and haven't bothered to call or contact me. When you're over 90 minutes late for a scheduled appointment time, a brief phone call would be nice.

Ken the service manager seemed very bored and disinterested. Waited ten minutes to be acknowledged, then told that they didn't clock in until 30 mins after opening. But they had the tire I needed in stock and did not try to upsell me.
