Today's episode of #DevBytes The Beauty of Scale with Google Cloud Platform is from +Colt McAnlis. When talking about Cloud Offerings, it's easy to forget the data-centers that make it all happen. In this video, Colt takes a quick look at maintaining Google's scale through it's data-centers, and how developers can leverage the same hardware and software running google's services to write their own applications.

So, Rey like HAS to be Han and Leia's daughter right?  I mean, dropping her off and abandoning her when she was five was, like, the only way to keep her alive, ya know??

Here's a nice little feature that escaped our documentation attention a while back.

If you've been longing for the expand-acl parameter to return, good news. You can request in-line expansion of permissions (and custom properties in files and changes calls.

The magic incantation requires using the fields query parameter. Of course everyone should already be using this to keep the response bodies all nice and svelt. Explicitly including the permissions or properties resources will cause them to be expanded in-line.

And by explicit, I mean really explicit. Broad patterns like "*", "items", and so on aren't enough. The specific path, such as "items/permissions" for files.list or "items/file/permissions" for changes.list needs to be included.

Once you're familiar with how the fields parameter syntax works, it's not at all hard to do. And with the ability to expand some of the nested collections in-line, you can reduce the overall # of queries you need to make if your app needs them.

Yes, there likely is increased latency when asking for that data. I haven't experimented to see if it's an appreciable difference or not.

Heads up, the Google Drive file open URL format is changing from http://docs.google.com/file to http://drive.google.com/file. Please keep in mind that as these URL formats are subject to change. We recommend using the Drive Web API to get reliable file URLs.

Did the 5 course menu with wine pairing. Everything was very good to exceptional, and wines paired perfectly. Impeccable service, always present but never overbearing or rushed. The downside? A wee bit pricey at over $250/person after tax & tip!

Small, but solid menu. Drinks are good and a few local beers that are nice finds (Devil Canyon's Scotch Ale is tasty!) Service can be on the slow side, particularly during dinner hours. Very nice outdoor space too!
