I’m in New York City, visiting my mom. I was going to stay for a week but the day before I was scheduled to go home, I changed my flights so I could stay a few extra days. My mother is 94 years old and lives alone. My father died more than 20 years ago;…

Here’s a film that’s stayed stuck in my noggin for several days after viewing it, for reasons both good and bad. It’s a genre mash-up that rises well above the pack. But it’s the two genres that are mashed up – westerns and torture porn – that give me a…

Everywhere I travel, people ask me where I’m from. (Except, oddly enough, in Paris, where people first talk to me in French and then apologize in English, telling me they thought I looked French. And yes, I do take that as a compliment.) But in Manila,…

I'm not trying to disagree with you!  (Until now, I guess.)  You said people speak to you first in Spanish in NYC, I asked if Spanish was your first language, you said yes, I said NYC has a large Latino/Hispanic population and then attempted a bad joke about hipsters. No disagreement, no argument, just conversation.

This is the cover of Philippine Tatler that I wrote about a little while ago. Today I came across this story from Tech In Asia – How Social Media is Changing the Philippine Elections. It includes this worth-repeating quote: Philippine elections are the…

Last week was an extremely busy week, with a 3 day trip to Hong Kong shoved in at the last minute.  I’m hope just in time for “super typhoon” Koppu aka Lando. Our house has made it through all of the storms so far and I’m not expecting any problems from…

Nailed it, politicians in the Philippines are all about lining their own pockets. Such a shame that this happens year after year, they gain the people trust with false promises and lies and then go about raping the country.

In Hong Kong they call it Chinglish or Engrish (more racially disaparaging, no?). In Singapore it’s Singlish. What is it called in the Philippines? Philglish?  Or just nonsense? Nevertheless, this is a potent reminder that expats in the Philippines may…

Half of my blog posts start off with me apologizing for not posting frequently because I’ve been busy. I’ve been meaning to write a long post about the Manila airport bullet thing and possibly I will get to it this weekend. But until then, watch this:…

I’ve been thinking about my future and getting some input from friends to help me decide. What’s interesting is that two of them have said the same thing, “You’re miserable in Manila.” Both friends are in Hong Kong and presumably both of them formed that…

This week I’ve been in a vaguely good mood. I had a brief trip to Hong Kong that was pleasant, despite some relatively brutal meetings. At least at night I ran into friends wherever I went, had some decent food, got smashed on 18 year old single malt…
