A few years ago I published a guest post on Cardiff Blogs. With the site going offline, they've kindly allowed me to republish it on SEOno:

I'm dealing with a bizarre GMB ranking issue for one of my clients - I'm curious to know if anyone's come across it before - a Google search on the subject comes up short... It screams penalty or bug, but the GMB Support team keep fobbing me off (despite repeated attempts), just passing on generic "here's how to rank your listing/site" info.

For their main keyword, they're not showing in the Snack Pack (Top 3). If you click on 'More places', the only way that their listing will show up on Google Maps is if you zoom into their area and no other competitors are showing up. The moment you get to a portion of the map where it could show them and a competitor, it'll only show the competitor, instead of both of them. It's like Google are purposefully not showing the listing - and will only do so as a last resort if nothing else is available in the selected area.

The listing is 2+ years old, claimed/verified, has 5+ reviews, lots of images, all the relevant info filled out, and occasional updates in the G+ posts sections. To put this into perspective, one of the nearby listings that Google is 'favouring' is claimed but has no images, no G+ updates, no reviews, barely any info beyond the NAP. On-site is optimised and its inbound links are all white-hat, and the website's homepage even ranks mid-page 1 for the main keyword - so it's not the case that the website doesn't rank at all... Just the GMB.

Another random thought/idea: we had an issue whereby Google Map Maker thought that the actual building/postal address was elsewhere (further down the road), but it was resolved ages ago - maybe 1-2 years ago. A delayed knock-on effect, maybe...?

I appreciate that seeing the listing itself might help further, but I'm reluctant to de-anonymise it. I'm recultant to Hot Seat it, too (sorry)... If anyone is happy to give thoughts/advice based on this info alone then that'd be amazing. Thank you!

A new post from my folks' IT recruitment business, +Computer Recruiter!

Remember that time we published 25 blog posts in one month? We've just added a 26th post to #CR25 , to coincide with our 26th anniversary. This time we've interviewed Cardiff app localisation company Applingua, who run a directory of Welsh Apps (and can also offer funded app localisation, too)!

My latest for +State of Digital - I recently came out of a year-long civil law dispute with a client who refused to pay me. In this post I give advice to other freelancers/agency owners on how to protect yourself pre-dispute and what to do if a dispute unfortunately happens...
Advice on how SEOs and digital marketers can protect themselves from client disputes and fighting things out in the UK civil law courts.

My latest post for +State of Digital - More and more publishers are adding rel="nofollow" to their outbound links (sites that they're linking out to). I argue why they shouldn't, pointing out a few examples along the way...
Nofollow is necessary in some circumstances (such as blog comments), but more and more publishers are applying it willy-nilly. Find out why they shouldn't.

In case you missed it last week... Please vote for my blog in the UK Blog Awards 2016. Only takes 30 seconds. Thanks in advance!
Started in 2011, SEOno (pronounced ess-ee-oh-no) is a digital marketing blog with a focus on SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) while also covering other forms of online marketing, such as social media marketing and Pay Per Click advertising. As a freelance consultant, I sometimes also cover topics related to freelancing, entrepreneurship and starting your own business.

New on SEOno - Lessons learnt from concentrating on getting reviews on Google so much that you miss a negative review on Facebook, and need to play catch-up to safeguard the profile and counteract the damage...

New on SEOno - My blog has been entered into the +UK Blog Awards 2016 ( #UKBA16 ). The first phase is public voting, so if you like my blog and would be happy to give it a vote then I'd really appreciate it - thanks!
Just like last year, SEOno has been entered into the UK Blog Awards 2016 (#UKBA16). Last year I made the shortlist of PR, Media, Marketing & Comms blogs in the Individual (non-Company) section.…

I recently hired Owain of Tree Top for a small project and wasn't disappointed - I'd happily recommend him.

I hired Harding Evans to help me to give advice relating to a money claim, after a client unfortunately refused to pay a few invoices I was owed. I was really impressed with Nicola and William's advice as well as their willingness to help and to make sure that I fully understood the legalese involved. I wouldn't hesitate to use HE again or to refer them in - in fact I have already do so.

BPU Accountants were recommended to me by my parents, who have been working with them for years. I'd just started my own business and wanted to appoint an accountant who could help me with my tax return and could also answer any questions that I had, as I was new to self-employment and knew very little about tax issues. Dealing first with Martin and then Adam, I was not disappointed - no question was too small, and often they would reply to me on the same day, within a matter of hours. I found them to be very approachable and friendly, which is important when you're dealing with something so important. I'd happily recommend them to anyone in Cardiff/South Wales who's looking for an accountant - I'm looking forward to continuing to work with them over the coming years.

I've been a member of Welsh ICE for over a year, pretty much since starting my own business. ICE has been a massive help to me: opening up business funding, getting support from their mentoring scheme, networking with fellow members (resulting in a fair few new clients/projects), using their meeting rooms and having an official office address that I can use on business cards. It's more than just office space - and it beats working from home...! Also, living in the north of Cardiff, it's such an easy commute - it's quicker than heading into the centre of Cardiff from where I am. I really recommend it. If anyone I know goes self-employed, I let them know about ICE straight away.

The food was nice but the place is unclean and unhygienic: the highchair for the baby had old food glued onto it; there was food stuck to the menus on our tables; there was food stuck to the wall(?!) where we were sat; and worst of all, there were two hairs in my food, one of which was curly and either looked like a chest hair or something worse. Absolutely vile.

Seen a few bands here - it's a great venue. Nice, friendly atmosphere and staff. I just wish we had an equivalent in Cardiff!
