New on SEOno - After a bit of a quiet spell, letting the sales pipeline drop, I wanted to share my experiences with networking, going to events, etc. and some more unusual techniques that I used (or you could use) to help drive sales as a freelancer/small business/startup...

I've written a guest post for +SEMrush! All about parallax web design and its SEO-unfriendless. But is there a way to have parallax AND an SEO-friendly website...?
As search engine marketers, we know that the best time for us to be involved with a web design or redesign project is right at the beginning, so that SEO can be ‘baked in’ to the process right from the start. However, sometimes a website will be built and SEO will be a later consideration …

Very excited to share my first post for +State of Digital, who I am now blogging for roughly once a month!

New on SEOno - A discovery I made over the weekend suggests that Google may show a different snippet instead of the 'Mobile-friendly' tag even if your website is mobile friendly - which could negatively affect your click-through rate...
Just a quick post today based on a random discovery that I made over the weekend... I was checking a SERP on behalf of my parents' company (IT recruitment sector) from my phone simply because I did...

New on SEOno - Following on from talking about CR 25 (25 blog posts in one month) at #BrightonSEO , +SEMrush invited me to do a webinar about it, going into more detail about the whole campaign:
In late May I was approached by the team at SEMrush about hosting a webinar, going into more detail about the CR 25 campaign that I ran in January. I'd already given a talk about it at BrightonSEO,...

So here's an interesting one... A client of mine offers CCTV installation services in South Wales, UK so I checked the results for "cctv south wales" and the 'A' pin is based in North Wales, which is about 130 miles (c. 200km) away...

So much for Pigeon reigning in the proximity dial eh?! :-P Any ideas why this might be happening? A bug? A really, really super optimised GMB listing?! Something else?

Thanks +Ryan Scollon. It must've been a bug, as I'm no longer seeing it - although I'm now seeing a business based near Carmarthen (c. 70 miles west of Cardiff) as the 'G' pin, which is also a little odd. Oh well! :-)

Hi folks. A client of mine has just gotten some professional photos done including interior/exterior shots as well as a team shot. They've all gone on his GMB listing and I've made the team shot the cover photo. Now I know he's very image conscious (it took long enough for him to agree to the photos!) so I wouldn't be surprised if he asks me to change it to one of the interior shots instead.

However... I'm sure I heard/read somewhere that team photos are better for conversions - especially for a small local business - as it shows their friendliness and personality. Does anyone have any resources and/or personal anecdotes that I can pass on to him should he request the change, to help change his mind?

Also, what do you tend to have for the cover photo? A team photo, an interior/exterior photo, or something else entirely? Or does it vary from client to client? Also, do you use the same as the cover photo for Facebook and Twitter profiles, or use something else for them instead? Curious to know everyone's preferences. :-)

+Joana Fatima Sinel - Good suggestion, thanks! We have a pic of the main optometrist examining someone's eye but it's a bit... graphic. So I wouldn't want it to have the opposite effect and put people off if they're funny about that type of thing! However I think we also have a normal one where he's attending to a patient, so I might consider using that one instead.

BPU Accountants were recommended to me by my parents, who have been working with them for years. I'd just started my own business and wanted to appoint an accountant who could help me with my tax return and could also answer any questions that I had, as I was new to self-employment and knew very little about tax issues. Dealing first with Martin and then Adam, I was not disappointed - no question was too small, and often they would reply to me on the same day, within a matter of hours. I found them to be very approachable and friendly, which is important when you're dealing with something so important. I'd happily recommend them to anyone in Cardiff/South Wales who's looking for an accountant - I'm looking forward to continuing to work with them over the coming years.

My wife and I stayed here while I went to a conference and she shopped and explored the lovely Brighton. The staff are lovely, friendly and go out of their way to make sure that you're happy. The room was awesome - brilliantly decorated and really comfortable. The conference I go to is every half a year and so I'm hoping to stay here each and every time I go!

I've been a member of Welsh ICE for over a year, pretty much since starting my own business. ICE has been a massive help to me: opening up business funding, getting support from their mentoring scheme, networking with fellow members (resulting in a fair few new clients/projects), using their meeting rooms and having an official office address that I can use on business cards. It's more than just office space - and it beats working from home...! Also, living in the north of Cardiff, it's such an easy commute - it's quicker than heading into the centre of Cardiff from where I am. I really recommend it. If anyone I know goes self-employed, I let them know about ICE straight away.

My wife and I recently needed to see an optician and a friend recommended Parish Opticians in nearby Birchgrove. Both of them were emergency appointments, so we managed to get it sorted through the PEARS scheme. I saw Richard (the owner), who is very friendly, while my wife saw one of the other opticians at the practice. We were both really happy with the process and especially the fact that it was free (thanks to PEARS). Couldn't fault it. I'd definitely recommend them.

Rob's approach to business coaching is fantastic. In our first session we talked about an issue that had been bothering me and causing concern for a while, which he helped me to overcome in no time at all - something that used to give me sleepless nights was no longer plaguing my mind at all. You just can't put a price on that. Hugely worthwhile and highly recommended.
