+Sam Montooth Yup, I was SO surprised when the Markbass overdrive turned out to work that way. I'd experimented with a couple of boutique low gain guitar overdrives before that, that sounded great, but the Markbass beat them all for that purpose.

This combination of 5 pedals gives me SO many options... When I do more vids, I'll also feature the Markbass Tube Marker (similar in some ways to the darkglass, but more 'fluffy' sounding) and the Aguilar Agro (capable of full-bore metal high gain heaviness!)

this is both brilliant and inspiring! Good on you, Rob. Will be in touch about this as a case study at some point :)

so so great. Julie's one of my favourite bassists in the world. Effortlessly creative.

Bandcamp - still paying our rent month to month. The amount we've made in the last 7 months pretty much covers our rent for that period. (the joys of living in Birmingham, not London  )

It coincides with the decision to make more music available for less money. 10 albums for £10 - my entire solo catalogue available for a tenner, and as a result, loads of people, including many who'd already paid lots more for some of the albums, have bought loads more music. And are listening to it, and sharing it around.

It would take some kinds of epic numbnuttery to actually start to fret over the 'unit value' of the music, when it's meant that digital sales of music have become a deeply tangible (nay, vital) part of our ongoing sustainability. I'm not saying that anyone else trying the same thing would suddenly get the same results - the conversation I've been having with my audience about this stuff that has enabled us all to understand it better stretches back a LONG way. I've written a couple of books'-worth of articles and blogs about the changing nature of 'value' in the shift from the economics of scarcity (and the mediated role of distributors/retailers and the media) to one of ubiquity (and massively increased access to conversational opportunities between artists and the people who dig what they do). The terms have changed, the costs have changed, the method of proliferation and discovery have changed, the weird social imbalance that 'fame' sets up is no longer the preferred social mechanism for huge numbers of musicians.

Changes of this scale require a new linguistic framework for describing what's happening. That's the bit we're all finding most difficult, it seems. Struggle on, friends. We'll get there. It's very very early days for this level of transformative change. xxx

And if you want a truckload of amazing music for not much money, and to be part of the ongoing viability of my music-making life, head here: http://music.stevelawson.net/album/what-the-mind-thinks-the-heart-transmits

This is so great. What a remarkable return (have just discovered The Cherry Thing, which missed me entirely when it came out - also amazing) - this album is going to be on repeat for a LONG time. :)
