Stepping it up again :)

Super excited that I get to talk about this now! This is how Open Source should work - sharing and contributing ideas and software back and forth, working towards bettering the ecosystem as a whole.

Best part is that those devices sold to consumers using the QRD base and software instantly gain the benefit of all the community involvement in CM and Cyanogen alike.

CAF is a well known figure in the Android ROM circles, and now we have a way to not only influence design of a large platform, but to also serve as an amplifier to how far a community driven feature can go.

This goes beyond forums, pages and communities - this has the potential to shape hundreds of millions of user's experiences with Android.

We'll be sponsoring the first ever Stanford University TreeHacks next weekend! We are excited to be talking open source and seeing what kind of cool features these bright young minds create for the @CyanogenMod project. http://ow.ly/IXHXl

Seriously dude, go astroturf somewhere else. This was a thread about sponsoring a hackathon and you just showed up hating on us. Thanks.

You can love CM or you can hate us, but we have no plans of taking our toys and going home. The vibrant, active developer community around CM, it's forks, and even the "anti-CM" ROMs is where the action is.

This was a huge undertaking from +Clark Scheff and +Andy Mast! Can't wait to see what can be done with it on L.

And so begins the journey with CM12 and the theme engine.  Today we merged ~13,000+ lines of changes to CM12 for themes.  Nightly builds after today should include the theme engine for you all to enjoy.

There are a few things I would like to point out.

1.  Since Lollipop switched from holo to material styles, most, if not all, themes designed for CM11 won't look too great when applied on CM12, unless an app is still using the holo styles.  Keep that in mind as you play around with your existing themes.

2.  This one is extremely important to themers.  Some themes may have bad .9.png images and if that is the case the theme will no longer work.  We were a bit lenient with this situation in CM11 but due to major changes in the way aapt works we can no longer afford to be lenient.  If your theme no longer shows up or it won't install, check logcat to see why.  Most likely it will be a bad or malformed ninepatch.  (see attached screenshot of what you'll see if a bad theme is on your device)

3.  Another one for theme designers.  Currently you cannot have a theme that is designed for CM12 and CM11.  This is an issue with CM11 not knowing what to do with assets such as vector drawables.  I'm looking into a possible patch for CM11 but there will be no guarantee that a user will take the update and they may still experience issues with your theme so please keep this in mind.  The play store will allow you to submit an apk that is targeting CM12 instead of CM11 and it will provide the end user with the correct version.

4.  And another for you theme designers ;).  When designing a theme for CM12, you will need to make sure you specify a targetSdkVersion="21" in your <uses-sdk> tag.  This will let the system know that it was designed for CM12 and not CM11.  We will be updating the template in the coming days so you can use that as a reference.

5.  Play around and let us know what you think!

edit
Forgot to mention that we dropped support for themes based on the T-Mobile theme engine.

Antutu Video Tester

This is a gnarly app that will wreck your phone's media stack, and possibly crash your phone. Its a nasty sequence of video clips that will test how well lots of different video+audio combinations work on your Android device. The test covers everything from 4K H265 to 24-bit FLAC, to FLV, and everything in between.

CM12 (on most devices) gets a perfect score! CM11 not so much :)

We're taking full advantage of all the new A/V capabilities in L, and we brought in FFMPEG to fill the gaps. Some of these are pretty obscure combinations that you'd never see in the wild, though.  No reason for not being comprehensive!  Hours of sleep? None.

What's your score? (be sure to include your device name and ROM)

+Steve Kondik All my video (sync) issues have been fixed in today's cm12 nightly (02/24) for the opo. Thank you so much for looking into this. Unlike stated by Andrew Bartholomew in the commit, I have no problems with YouTube e.g.

The new CM11S update for the +OnePlus One is now shipping with MaxxAudio by +Waves Audio!   The first thing you'll notice is the "impossible" amount of bass that the tiny onboard speakers are cranking out, and your tiny earbuds will sound huge. It sounds great with your expensive headphones and USB DACs too :)  You won't notice a hit on battery life either, since it takes full advantage of the Hexagon DSP. We put together a new version of AudioFX (+Roman Birg made some epic knobs!) that lets you create and save multiple custom presets using the 10-band graphic equalizer, so you can get the perfect sound from whatever you've got plugged into your phone.

What would you like to see in the next version? :)

Please do read this.

This certainly clears a few things up.
Cyanogen's Founder clears the air If you've been following the misadventures of OnePlus and Micromax over in India, you know that there's been a bit of a disagreement over who gets to use Cyanogen OS (as opposed to the totally open-source CyanogenMod) due to an exclusivity agreement that was created alongside the launch of the Micromax Yu brand. It's been a pretty big mess that has...
