A lot of the tool sets are now their to allow these types of things to happen.

We today have artificial intelligence like watson and we also have augmented reality and machine vision that is very accurate.

Now imagine over the next few years when all of this technology converges with deep learning in single platforms. It to be honest is hard to imagine what the outcome of this would be like.

My review of The Engineer's Sketchbook is up on Wink Books today!
The Engineer's Sketchbook is a bit of history that hasn't gone out of style. A visual dictionary of mechanisms, movements and other mechanical solutions to all kinds of problems.

If you haven't been yet, Wink Books is a wonderful site dedicated to showing off the finest books that are best enjoyed as physical things, not just words on a screen.

Wrong kitty litter causes nuclear waste accident.
Filed under Headlines You Can't Make Up
The release of plutonium at a New Mexico nuclear dump may have been caused by a bad purchase at the pet shop.

If you happen to see the current issue of +MAKE magazine around (you'll recognize it as the one with a meditative +Grant Imahara on the cover) Pick up a copy. Lots of great robots, thermite making, and classic Lego flight jackets. And my fun toothbrush timer.

Step 1) Corporations are people.
Step 2) Robots are on the boards of corporations.
Step 3) Robots are people.
Hong Kong based venture capital firm Deep Knowledge Ventures (DKV) has appointed a machine learning program to its board. Called VITAL, it's an "equal member" that will uncover trends "not immediately obvious to humans" in order to make investment recommendations.

3D- printed failures, just $6.66
I don't know if to laugh or cry.
3D Printing with a desktop 3D printer does not always work out quite as expected, the failures can range from subtle flaws to full blown disasters, but they always have a certain beauty.  If you do not have access to a desktop 3D printer, or have a loved one who is considering buying one, we can save you some time, money and frustration by shipping you one of our 3D print failures. Each piece is uniquely flawed, 3D printed in PLA (Polylactic acid...

Ever wonder how they make foam rubber into an “egg crate” shape? You can tell that it isn't molded that way, because there is not a smooth skin on the surfaces. And it clearly isn't milled to that shape, since it comes in matched top and bottom pieces that are cut from the same initial block of ...

I'm super excited by this project. When NASA was unable/unwilling to resurrect an unused satellite, a few citizen scientists have stepped up to do it. (With NASA's explicit permission.)

Can't stop playing with this interactive chart:
What people major in vs what jobs they do
Unless you went into Nursing or Education there's a less than even chance you work in your major.
What are you going to do with that degree? Jobs by college major. This is a quick Sankey visualization of how college majors relate to professions, based on data from the American Community survey. On the left are the larget college majors; to the right are the most common professions.

Maker Faire is hard to describe if you haven't been.
But this video does a pretty good job of showing a small sample of what you might see.
