This is not something I would normally do, but the request is quite urgent and very personal to me, so I feel I must do what I can.
In January 2012, my friend’s 12 year old was diagnosed with rare form of cancer on the base of her spine. Treatment initially began with a 7 hour emergency spinal operation to prevent what was becoming serious nerve damage to the lower part of her body. As well as the cancer, traditional radiotherapy on that area carries the risk of damage to her spine and ovaries.
There is an alternative treatment, Proton therapy, which is a type of particle therapy which uses a beam of protons to irradiate diseased tissue more precisely, reducing the risk of side effects in sensitive areas such as the spinal cord.
There are no proton therapy machines in the UK, but has been offered Proton Therapy in Jacksonville, Florida. The UK NHS (National Health Service) will cover some of the costs, but a large amount of money is needed, so now the fundraising starts.
The window of opportunity for this is a matter of weeks – hence the urgency of this request.http://www.gofundme.com/allaboutniamh
