What makes a great headshot? I'm an Atlanta based headshot photographer. I shoot mostly business people and professional headshots for folks looking to get into the Atlanta acting scene. In any headshot session I find myself saying the same three words to evoke a good expression. Warmth, confidence, and approachability. All my favorite headshots have those 3 elements to them. Yet there's another element all my favorite headshots lack.

I'm not sure what right term would be exactly: Hesitancy, worry, self-concern, self concious etc.... All these things amount to a pre-occupation. Anything that distracts from your warmth, confidence, and you making someone feel safe to approach you. Maybe you're concerned with your hair, your outfit, your teeth... it could be anything. But it's a disruption to your connection with the viewer, the camera.

I've often heard it described as a "connection" with the camera. It is closely related to confidence and yet I'd also use the word commitment.

In all my favorite portraits there's not the slightest hint of doubt in the gaze of the subject.

I love Peter Hurley's work and he makes much of the "squinch". The video went viral on YouTube. I go into businesses to shoot headshots and people talk about it or ask how their "squinch" is. The squinch is that slight pressure from your lower eye lids that narrows your eyes. Some people look good with some degree of squinch and others don't. I don't think a squinch is what matters. The point I would make is that the "squinch" represents confidence and determination. So I wouldn't practice the "squinch" without thinking of confidence, warmth, determination, and the human connection.

Genuine is another important word.

When I listen to actors and directors they don't seem to coach physicality much. For instance I don't hear directors say, "I want you to widen your eyes so we can see as much white as possible, now raise your eye brows... ok now drop your jaw and let it go slack..." Rather, they say, "Look surprised."

So my advice is to stand in front of the mirror and practice feeling warm, confident, and approachable. The truth is we're all actors from time to time. We don't always feel that way but you need to look yourself in the eye and be able to convey that to yourself. When you do your headshot session will be a tremendous success.

Tim Faber is CEO of Snelling Staffing and wanted some LinkedIn headshots as well as some other promotional photography for annual reports and other collateral. Atlanta professional headshots are what I do so I was delighted to help him out. Take a look at some of our results. If you're in the need of a business headshot hit me up here on Google or through my website.

Relaxed business headshots. So you want to drive a Tesla, Humvee, BMW, and a Mercedes all in the same week? Drive Clutch! Kenzie Lane's latest start up out of Buckhead is a car subscription service. Drive Clutch hired me to do their business headshots. Since Drive Clutch is a bit looser of a company in terms of corporate culture we used their office space as a background. I'm loving how they turned out.
