A timely re-post.  The title says it all, really.

There's nothing truly US-specific in the essay, despite the back links.
Followup to:  The Two-Party Swindle, The American System and Misleading Labels If evolutionary psychology could be simplified down to one sentence (which it can't), it would be:  "Our instincts are adaptations that increased...

It's that time again, the simplistic " Who should you vote for? " quiz. At least it's not quite so out of whack as it was a decade ago . Your UK Election 2015 quiz results UK Independence   53 Conservative   26 Liberal Democrat   10 Labour -30   Green -48 ...

"Wolf!" they cried, back on the original #earthday and they're still doing it.
In the May 2000 issue of Reason Magazine, award-winning science correspondent Ronald Bailey wrote an excellent article titled “Earth Day, Then and Now” to provide some historical perspective on the 30th anniversary of Earth Day. In that article, Bailey noted that around the time of the first Earth Day, and in the years following, there [...]

What hath Gygax wrought!?

Now, Lodoss War aka "My campaign log, the manga" was one thing but "Is It Wrong To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon?" aka DanMachi is more than a step too far.
A new trend sees women posting pictures on social media of their torsos with a ribbon tied in a loop under the breasts and around their arms, inspired by a popular new anime character called Hestia.

This would be more amusing if half my pension wasn't with the parent company.
OK, there's been some amazingly stupid contracts written over the years including more than a few marriage ones. But among people who really ought to know what they're doing this one from France probably does take the biscuit. It's a hybrid life insurance/savings product and there's nothing very strange or [...]

Apparently that plan was very popular with the insurance agents and actuaries themselves.

April cycling
Readings of 11900.1 and 1202.2 mean 144.7 + 262.2, a total of 406.9 miles, 1288 YTD, having cycled at least a kilometer every day this month -- #30daysofbiking . And it was only today that we really had April showers to dampen the excitement.

Happy English Day!
Hang on; he's a Saint so he can do ahistorical miracles. It's all part of the polytheistic aspect of unreformed Christianity. An aspect that it shares with the behaviour of large numbers of Moslems, I understand; saints, relics, pilgrimages, and all that mumbo-jumbo.

Because nothing shows your concern about burning carbonaceous fuels like racking up gratuitous air miles.  If you believe there's a serious problem and want to #ActOnClimate, there's this thing called a bicycle, which is way more efficient in terms of calories per kilogram-kilometer.
“Heading down to DC to catch an #EarthDay flight on Air Force One tomorrow with the President. We're going to #ActOnClimate.”

Being in the market for a substantial lock for my summer commuting bike, I spotted the Hiplok GOLD All Black in amongst the high-security offerings in one of the bike shops in town -- it's wearable, which is a bonus when the usual run of locks only have frame mounts that won't fit on the target bike's frame.

Trying it out on the commuting run, there was a little sensation of chafing against the hip bones because it is heavy (2.4kg); possibly I'd want more padding than a tracksuit bottom over cycling shorts for an all-day run but for an hour or so's cycling to the office, no problem.

The registration process is a bit more manual than necessary -- the lock packaging directs you to a page on the site, which tells you have to send them an e-mail, and when that gets a response it's in the form of a PDF to print out, put your name and e-mail on, photograph with the key on, and send them the photo, to get a registration code by return which turns out to be the number on the key (rather than, say, the number encrypted by your e-mail to get an obscured but associated value).

Yes, it's good that they require proof of physical possession of the keys; but a link to the PDF and a form with an "upload photo" button would cut out a lot of the faffing.
