Toshiba Satellite Pro error C1900101-4000D (Windows 10 upgrade fails)
After upgrading my wife's older Dell laptop from Win7 to WinX with no problems, I was rather taken aback that my Toshiba Satellite Pro L770 (bought just before Win8 released, to tide me over until the next version after) failed some time around the 80% mark...

Plotting days to planned RTM vs time for Win95 gives an all too familiar result.
The best graphs are the ones that require no explanation. You are just told what the x- and y-axes represent, and the answer just jumps out at you. One of the greatest graphs I've seen at Microsoft is this one that a colleague of mine put together as Windows 95 was nearing completion.

The Real, as opposed to the comforting fantasies of the Left; the Real, where the "victims" of inequality enjoy a higher standard of living than the upper crust did or could when I was a child.

Today concludes my first year logging my journeys on the Cambridgeshire Cycle Challenge website , over which span I've logged 601 journeys covering 4204 miles; supposedly 1372.0 kg CO2 saved (ignoring my increased respiration when burning the 155,532 calori...

August cycling
Usual cycling round-up, with the end of the month numbers 12310.8 and 2125.0, for 49.3 + 192.4 + 60 off-meter or 301.7 miles total for the month, and 2760 year to date -- so down even more on last month due to generally miserable weather (culminating in typ...

Another good intro to what economics is all about; especially relevant when a supposedly serious politician in the UK has rediscovered the magic money tree, with help from other similar economic illiterates.
This is Part 9 of a 17-part series of posts summarizing Bob Murphy's indispensable book Choice: Cooperation, Enterprise, and Human Action . Murphy's book is itself is a summary of Ludwig von Mises's classic treatise “Human Action.” Like previous posts, this post is a summary of a summary.

This looks like an interesting concept -- making concurrency requirements explicit and composable, without going to the full Erlang-style object==process model, with its own scheduler engine under the covers.
Efficient communication and synchronization is crucial for finegrained parallelism. Libraries providing such features, while indispensable, are difficult to write, and often cannot be tailored or composed to meet the needs of specific users. We introduce reagents, a set of combinators for ...

Coming soon to a Security Architect near you

'In August, 2015, NSA announced that it is planning to transition "in the not distant future" to a new cipher suite that is resistant to quantum attacks. "Unfortunately, the growth of elliptic curve use has bumped up against the fact of continued progress in the research on quantum computing, necessitating a re-evaluation of our cryptographic strategy." NSA advised: "For those partners and vendors that have not yet made the transition to Suite B algorithms, we recommend not making a significant expenditure to do so at this point but instead to prepare for the upcoming quantum resistant algorithm transition."['

"Though C# has many great features, a handful could have been designed differently or omitted entirely, says Eric Lippert, who should know, because he served on the design committee. The co-author of Essential C# 6.0, Fifth Edition shares his personal top 10 (bottom 10?) C# design annoyances."

"Getting" Functional Programming
We all know there's something to "get" -- but is it one massive "Eureka!" moment, or is it a series of smaller "Aha!" steps?

My personal steps along the way.
We all know there's something to "get" -- but is it one massive "Eureka!" moment, or is it a series of smaller "Aha!" steps? I think that it's the latter, but that most functional languages drop them in your lap in one undigested lump, because I had an odd introduction to the style.
