Finally I blog again, with praise for Dean Baquet for finally recognizing the New York Times' need to address its use of unnamed sources and for Margaret Sullivan for her powerful and persistent reporting and commentary on this issue:
A faulty Times article on San Bernardino and social media shows need for more skepticism & systemic change. My post: — Margaret Sullivan (@Sulliview) December 18, 2015 I'm disappointed that the...

When I encouraged the Reveille editorial board to consider page-one editorials, I wasn't expecting the New York Times to follow my advice:

Kudos to my former Digital First colleagues at the San Bernardino Sun for excellent breaking news coverage on Twitter and a liveblog. I break down their (and some other media coverage of a tough, unfolding story:
Southern California media has done an excellent job, from what I've seen, of reporting the mass shooting in San Bernardino using liveblogs and social media. This post is my early and admittedly inc...

In a separate post, I compare "Spotlight" to another great movie about investigative journalism:
"Spotlight" may become this generation's "All the President's Men," a riveting movie based on real-life journalism that uncovered abuse of power. The similarities, both in the journalistic stories ...

Here's why journalists should strive to use named sources more. Look how much more credible the New York Times story about Ben Carson's inability to grasp foreign affairs is because we know who the source is, and that he's willing to stand behind his remarks.
Damn NYT, "taking advantage" of an on-the-record source: — ErikWemple (@ErikWemple) November 18, 2015 I have taken the New York Times to task occasionally for overuse of unnamed sources. So I join ...

I was surprised but not shocked. I've talked too many reluctant people to talk on the record to believe that it's as difficult as we often treat it. Not saying it's easy, but lots of people are fundamentally honest and open. Not all of them are former spies, though ...

Tips on writing for memes, inspired by a lot of good and bad Ben Carson memes:
I was updating some slides for a class on writing for social media last week and wanted to update the memes I used early in the class. When I taught a similar class last spring, I used some Rand Pa...

My second take of the day on front-page opinion, about the Des Moines Register's great editorial cartoonists: Brian Duffy, Frank Miller and Ding Darling.
I have never shared the view that a newspaper's front page needed to be a sacrosanct opinion-free zone. The New York Times published a front-page editorial about gun violence today, and I blogged s...

I review @JewyMarie's day interacting with the media horde about the San Bernardino shooting, which I'm pretty sure she witnessed.
Eyewitnesses who tweet about horrible news events can be important, willing and helpful sources for journalists covering breaking news. All journalism ethics codes stress accuracy and verification....

Fond memories of travel and journalism training in Canada (and concern about upheaval at the country's biggest newspaper company).
Perhaps the most alluring job I ever turned down was an offer to lead newsroom transformation for Canada's largest newspaper company. My fondness for Canada is long and deep, and a job that would m...

It's been a while since I've written a post this difficult. But after watching "Spotlight" Saturday, I've blogged my advice on covering sexual abuse by clergy (with hopes that it never deserves to be as big a story as it once was):
I can't imagine how uncomfortable it would be for survivors of sexual abuse by priests to watch "Spotlight." It was plenty uncomfortable for me as a reporter who merely had the unpleasant job of in...

Usually it's best to teach what you know. But sometimes, when you agree to teach what you don't know, you learn quickly, and that's good, too:
Virtual reality has long been one of those things on my someday list, a list that often gets more intention than attention. Unless I get a nudge. Like a request from the dean. I sent Jerry Ceppos, ...
