The Daily Reveille and other LSU Student Media products need a new strategy and stronger revenues to continue producing excellent products and providing valuable experience to our students. I blogg...

The New York Times made embarrassing corrections to a story based mostly on unnamed sources. Hmmm, has this ever happened before?
Last week I noted that the New York Times consistently fails to meet its own standards regarding unnamed sources and linking to digital sources of content. I invited responses from Times Executive ...

I continue yesterday's discussion of linking with a rant, inspired by a Nieman Lab piece that summarized newspapers' stubborn resistance:
I remain an optimist that newspapers aren't dying. But if they die, the cause of death will be suicide, not that the evil Internet killed them. Hyperlinks are not a matter of life or death, even in...

When we were colleagues at Digital First Media, I admired Brian Charles' work (and presented him with a Journalist of the Year award). Now we're going to be working together to lead LSU Student Media.
I am pleased to announce that Brian Charles will be joining me at LSU later this month as a Student Media adviser. I think I first met Brian in 2013, when I was visiting the Pasadena Star-News for ...

As Gannett appears headed toward a single national news operation, I offer some observations and advice on such a venture, from my own experience:
I have some advice for Larry Kramer and Gannett on running a nationwide network of newsrooms as a single operation. Ken Doctor speculated yesterday that Kramer, publisher of USA Today, might lead G...

Many headlines & tweets about the crash that killed John and Alicia Nash just mention one of them. Not the one who inspired Jennifer Connelly's Oscar-winning performance. Didn't Alicia Nash deserve a mention?
I saw a bit of sexism on display by media and Twitter users in noting the deaths of John and Alicia Nash, the couple whose lives were portrayed in the movie "A Beautiful Mind." The Nashes died in a...

It's time to expand the conversation about the future of The Daily Reveille & all LSU Student Media:
Last week Elizabeth Crisp of the Advocate emailed me saying she wanted to write a "story about the direction things could be heading and your thoughts on the future of student media at LSU." I had ...

I combine comments on Glenn Greenwald's post about New York Times promiscuity on unnamed sources and Margaret Sullivan's post on linking:
The New York Times often and flagrantly violates its own standards for attribution. Executive Editor Dean Baquet ignored my call earlier this year for him to lose his famous temper about the Times'...

Thanks to Jim Romenesko for shining his spotlight for so many years into journalism's darkened corners.
The best 'Headless Body in Topless Bar' obit yet, says my emailer. — Romenesko (@romenesko) June 10, 2015 I don't think I ever leaked a newsroom memo to Jim Romenesko, but I kinda wish I had, and I...

The American Press Institute releases two reports on innovation in news organizations, one offering a strategy, the other citing best practices. They remind me of the Newspaper Next project when I was at API. I hope this one leads to deeper, more lasting change in the news biz, because we need it. Still.

An editor asks about digital production -- how to measure reporters' productivity and how to deal with complaints that some are doing more than others. I answer. https://stevebuttry.wordpress.com/2015/05/19/what-digital-productivity-expectations-should-reporters-meet/
An editor at a mid-sized newsroom asked me some questions about digital productivity expectations for reporters: We are banging our heads against the wall about this: How much content should report...
