The American Press Institute releases two reports on innovation in news organizations, one offering a strategy, the other citing best practices. They remind me of the Newspaper Next project when I was at API. I hope this one leads to deeper, more lasting change in the news biz, because we need it. Still.

An editor asks about digital production -- how to measure reporters' productivity and how to deal with complaints that some are doing more than others. I answer. https://stevebuttry.wordpress.com/2015/05/19/what-digital-productivity-expectations-should-reporters-meet/
An editor at a mid-sized newsroom asked me some questions about digital productivity expectations for reporters: We are banging our heads against the wall about this: How much content should report...

That one-year gig at LSU that I took on last year? Now I have a long-term position. Nice to get a new job without changing employers. I'm delighted to remain at LSU and help lead our student media in meeting the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead:

Former Scripps newsrooms have been working on newsroom transformation, a topic near and dear to me. I review a report on their work and offer some advice of my own:
I am cheering on the Four Platform Newsroom transformation efforts of the former E.W. Scripps Co. newsrooms. And I encourage you to read a new report, published today, about the Scripps project: Di...

A reporter asks for some interviewing advice. I respond at some length:
A reporter's email asked for advice on "steeling oneself to ask the tough questions? I ask as someone who tends toward introversion when the going gets tougher." Effective tough questions (and good...

Many headlines & tweets about the crash that killed John and Alicia Nash just mention one of them. Not the one who inspired Jennifer Connelly's Oscar-winning performance. Didn't Alicia Nash deserve a mention?
I saw a bit of sexism on display by media and Twitter users in noting the deaths of John and Alicia Nash, the couple whose lives were portrayed in the movie "A Beautiful Mind." The Nashes died in a...

Thanks to Scott Blanchard for sharing some advice and continuing the conversation on tough interviews:

"Gavin Rees, director of Dart Centre Europe, says that in every interview, there are two conversations: The one in the foreground that you're having with the other person, and the one in the background that you're having, in your head, with yourself."
-This is so true. It was a struggle sometimes, especially in over-the-phone interviews. I like how Blanchard talked about having balance in an interview.

In 1997, I examined the racial divide in our community and nation for the Omaha World-Herald. Here's how I'd update that story today:
I wrote this story in June 1997 for the Omaha World-Herald. At the time, President Bill Clinton was trying to focus the nation's attention on addressing its racial divide, through a program called ...

Facebook keeps changing its news-feed algorithm. I guess it's time I updated my Facebook engagement tips.
This week I saw a post from a Digital First Media newsroom in my Facebook news feed, and was surprised to see it there. I "liked" dozens of DFM newsrooms during my time there, but don't particularl...
