The BBC reports: MPs have voted overwhelmingly in favour of the government’s legislation for same-sex marriage in England and Wales. At the conclusion of the Commons’ first opportunity to debate the The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill, MPs voted by 400 to 175, a majority of 225, in favour of the legislation. It’s estimated some 140 Tory MPs voted to reject equal marriage. Here was my immediate reaction… Equal marriage passed by 400 votes to 175...

Liberal Hero of the Week is chosen by Stephen Tall, Co-Editor of Liberal Democrat Voice, and Research Associate at CentreForum. The series showcases those who promote any of the four liberal tenets identified in The Orange Book — economic, personal, political and social liberalism — regardless of party affiliation and from beyond Westminster. If they stick up for liberalism in some way then they’re in contention. Vince Cable Lib Dem business sec...

Mark Thompson has been looking at the maths of this week’s Tory vote on same-sex marriage, and discovered that the party’s 2010 intake of MPs was more likely to vote against than those elected in the previous two elections this century: David Cameron who took a clear lead on this issue has a big problem. The MPs that were elected in the general election where he led his party are more socially conservative than his contemporaries from the 2000s i...

David Cameron deserves a lot of credit for the stance he’s taken on equal marriage. But in addition to the principle, there was also calculation: he wanted to project an image of a modern Tory party, at ease with the the society it seeks to represent. Unfortunately for him he didn’t quite reckon on his party’s entrenched opposition to equality for minorities, with today’s Commons vote splitting his party. In the end, more Tory MPs voted against e...

This tweet today from The Times’s Philip Collins — mid-debate between Tim Montgomerie and Matthew d’Ancona about the tortuous fate of Tory modernisation — caught my attention: @matthewdancona @timmontgomerie We all thought the Lib Dems might not be up to government. Turns out they are but the Tories aren’t. — Philip Collins (@PCollinsTimes) February 6, 2013 Partly it’s the implicit praise for the steely resolve the Lib Dems have shown in trying ...

The EBC is dead! Long live the GCSE! That appears to be the headline from this morning’s news that Michael Gove is about to U-turn on his plans to reform the exams sat by 16 year-olds in England. Five initial thoughts from me… Credit where it’s due when a politician listens It’s easy to slam a politician when s/he U-turns. Politicians are damned when they do and damned when they don’t. Of course, it would have been better if Michael Gove had work...
