One from the summer archive: Just about my favorite place in Iceland, near Vik i Myrdals. Tremendous columnar basalt, roaring waves, black beach, wheeling terns, fast-moving puffins. But mostly just great rocks. Iceland is a geo-nerd paradise. It's like the country just sprang forth from the ocean. Barely any smooth stones on the entire island. With the mid-Atlantic ridge combined with a hot spot, it's the closest thing you'll get to dipping your toes into the Earth's mantle.
