Gas tax collections are down and that means funding for roads and bridges is also down. It's a problem Maine shares with the rest of the country, although it's partially self-inflicted here. And so far elected officials have been unable to find a solution that's economically or politically viable.

The bill is introduced amid new scrutiny of Maine's economic development programs, which lack oversight and accountability. It would retain the same tax benefits for employers while reducing minimum required benefits to workers.
The plan to further encourage business investment would lower the wage and benefit levels needed to qualify for the tax credits, despite the program's questionable track record.

Many Maine lawmakers and state police favor the bill, saying the requirement is an ineffective burden, but others want to retain screening and oppose letting citizens 'hide a gun.'

Many of the attorneys general in the 18 other states involved in the multistate lawsuit have similar discretion in allocation of their settlement funds. But how they spend it varies, and in Maine, past expenditures of settlement money isn't readily available to the public.

The events are amplified by the media attention and reverberations in social media, but some political observers wonder if Maine has been yanked from its solitary orbit of practical, pragmatic and solution-based politics by the black hole of acrimony, tribalism and partisan sorting that researchers are documenting throughout the rest of the country.
Comments from a Westbrook city councilor are the latest example
of discourse hitting a sour note.

The financiers reaping the benefits of Maine's tax credit program have been pleased with the lawmakers who made it possible. In addition to campaign donations, they gave two key backers an award.
Investors and their partnerships funneled $46,000 into lobbying and political campaign contributions for Maine legislators and the governor

A display of power that is feared and respected, despised and yet rarely countervailed.
The governor's style, validated in the last election, has led to exertion of power that few have been able to check.

The proposals would change the state's closed primary system and engage Maine largest voting block, but similar proposals have failed because of party opposition.

His appointment could effectively advance the governor’s proposal to dissolve the Bureau of Parks and Lands and fold its duties into the forest service, even if the Legislature rejects the proposal this session. Denico would also oversee the administration’s plan for increasing timber harvests on publicly owned land.
