Opportunities and challenges for social media in Extension

At the National eXtension Conference (#nexconf) several of us hosted a pre-conference session called Building connections - Social media in Extension. We had an activity where participants were asked to write down a challenge and an opportunity for social media in Extension. Linked is spreadsheet with those responses, in case anyone is interested.

Do you see anything surprising, encouraging, discouraging....

That was really neat to read.  What I saw on the challenges, for the most part are things that are related to training, credibility, and recognition. Things that you can take action on.  On the opportunities, what I saw is that they were much deeper - abilities to continue the education experience, giving people deeper and more experiences, creating relationships.  So overall it seemed the barriers were more technical and the opportunities more philosophical.  For instance, a barrier was a lack of being able to tie it to promotion and tenure, but an opportunity wasn't "you can tie it to promotion and tenure" - thus, I felt that the outlook for opportunities was more a long-term outlook on the potential.

I'm excited for this opportunity to hear +Jane Hart discussing the top 100 tools for learning 2013.  This is a prelude to her keynote at the National eXtension Conference ( #nexconf  ) and should not be missed, whether you'll be at the conference or not!

In this virtual conference, +Jane Hart  will present the results of her Top 100 Tools for Learning 2013 compiled from the votes of over 500 learning professionals (from education and workplace learning) worldwide. What does this tell us about the way we now learn? What does it means for professional learning and development, education and training?

Jane Hart will be one of the keynote speakers at the National eXtension Conference ( #nexconf ) in Sacramento in March 2014. Jane Hart is an independent Workplace Learning & Collaboration advisor, writer and international speaker. She is the Founder of the Centre for Learning & Performance Technologies. Here she writes about how to support learning, performance and collaboration in the social workplace.

It got down to around -15 F here last night, and apparently this grouse sought shelter on our screen porch - hope it provided a bit of shelter from the wind!

You might notice the tagline we used for this community - helping people be better learners and teachers through the use of online networks

Do you think this captures what network literacy is all about? How would you describe network literacy to someone?

It certainly helps me explain what we do more clearly to people. People seem to perk up and identify with that line so far....

This seems to nicely follow up +Jason Young 's post from the other day:

Perhaps because the price of speaking up—being ignored, judged, labeled a poor team player or worse—is paid immediately and by those who speak first. The price of silence, on the other hand, is exacted later and paid by the group—when the bubble of false harmony bursts, relationships crumble or projects fail.

...

We keep fooling ourselves that we need to wait and time will make us more open, as if time alone did anything more than harden tentativeness into superficiality. And in the meantime, violent politeness corrodes collaboration, problem solving and decision-making. It kills enthusiasm and drags learning to a halt.

That definitely made me sad. It doesn't have to be like this.

Traveling cross country and needed rear shocks replaced. Everyone was polite, helpful, and professional. I'd highly recommend.

Stayed here on route to Seattle from Yellowstone. Seems like a newer facility with excellent sites and hookups. Sites are gravel, with a concrete patio and grass buffer. Some shade trees, though not fully mature yet. Bathrooms, showers, and laundry were clean and up to date. Less expensive than any KOA I've stayed at. Would definitely stay here again!

Can't say enough good! Our refrigerator died, and when I called Scott, he said he thought it might be under a Maytag recall. He offered to come out and put in a part temporarily until we could get the part from Maytag. Maytag said it would be seven to ten days! Luckily, Scott had the part on hand, and was able to replace it under the recall workorder. He was pleasant, professional, and helpful, and I will be recommending him to friends.
