As some of you may know, I have an eye condition that I was born with called Nystagmus. This condition courses my eyes to wobble uncontrollably all of the time and this in turn affects my eye sight. This has prevented me from such things as reading as unable to see small print to playing football or driving as I’m unable to see things moving towards me at speed. I’ve been very lucky to have a family who have made sure that this condition does not overly affect my life.

Nystagmus Network is an organisation that helps families with family members who have Nystagmus, they provide support and advice to help them deal with this condition. Nystagmus Network also funds research in to Nystagmus to help either with an eventual cure for Nystagmus or at least make the lives of people with Nystagmus easier. ‘http://www.nystagmusnet.org/’.

Could I ask you all to support this organisation in the work that they’re doing by either donating what you can to assist their work: ‘http://www.justgiving.com/nystagmusnetwork’ or at least share this post as today is ‘Wobbly Wednesday’. An international awareness day for Nystagmus to spread the awareness of Nystagmus and how it affects people in their daily lives.

Thanks

More on my previous comments about the UK government talking about taking the role of parenting away from the parents and blocking porn by default.

Can I ask all my friends who believe that they know what is right and wrong and don’t require the Tory’s to do their job for them, please sign this e-petition and let them know that we don’t need someone else to tell us what our kids should and shouldn’t be looking at…

If you’re still not sure if you should sign this or not, here is a couple of Q&A’s to help you;-

Q: I’m not sure how to block content from my kids?
A: Most ISP’s provide web filtering software for free that you can download from their web site that actually offers more options such as blocking internet access at certain times. This is something that their more than happy to help you with and is already in place. You know what they should and shouldn’t be doing.

Q: I think this is a good idea as I’ve found my kids looking at The Sun’s page three site and magazines such as NUTS?
A: Well, the bill includes a line that states that the Sun’s page three and men’s mag sites will be excluded from the filtering.

Q: Will this just work or could I find things blocked that shouldn’t be blocked?
A: Short answer is yes, filtering software will have a list of sites it knows and when it comes across a site it doesn’t know it will look for words and other content to see if it should block it. This in turn will inevitably course false negatives with such sites as sexual health web sites and even possible sites that have been setup to help parents if they suspect their children our being abused.

Q: If this going forward will it stop the perverts?

A: Probably not, they will and probably already do use a connection called VPN, this technology creates a secure un-filterable connection between the user and a server in another country, once connected they can access any site that they country allows.

Q: There was two or three recent incidents in the news about to children who were groomed on the internet and killed, surly this is a good idea and will protect children from this type of incident?
A: This occurred on Facebook and a MSN Messenger, both would not be blocked. So no, it wouldn’t stop this, good parenting will stop this.

Q: Could this lead on to other sites being blocked such as torrents, smoking sites or any other sites that the Tory’s deem to be unexcitable?
A: Yeah it could, as simple as that.

Also, here is a couple of links for the top three broadband providers Parental Controls solutions for you.

Virgin: http://store.virginmedia.com/discover/broadband/your-broadband/protect-family/parental-controls.html

Thanks.
Do Not Force ISP Filtering of Pornography and Other Content. Responsible department: Department for Culture, Media and Sport. The government is currently trying to push a bill forcing ISPs to provide opt-out pornography filtering, however this is an issue that fails to address any real problems.
