I'm looking forward to the annual conference in June. Personally, the main reason this small, high powered conference is so valuable is the prospect for deep dialog and transformative learning.

Get the program at this link:

http://www.experientiallearninginstitute.org/events/

$100 registration ends today. It is still a bargain at tomorrow's $150.

Frank Rich: What has made [Trump] more entertaining than his peers is not his superficial similarities to any historical analogues or his shopworn celebrity. His passport to political stardom has been his uncanny resemblance to a provocative fictional comic archetype that has been an invigorating staple of American movies since Vietnam and Watergate ushered in wholesale disillusionment with Washington four decades ago. That character is a direct descendant of Twain’s 19th-century confidence men: the unhinged charlatan who decides to blow up the system by running for office — often the presidency — on a platform of outrageous pronouncements and boorish behavior. Trump has taken that role, the antithesis of the idealist politicians enshrined by Frank Capra and Aaron Sorkin, and run with it. He bestrides our current political landscape like the reincarnation not of Joe McCarthy (that would be Ted Cruz) but of Jay Billington Bulworth.

Excellent article, although I think Rich can't be expected to understand that the electorate's Cognitive Mean is more bug than feature.
Far from destroying it, he’s exposing all its phoniness and corruption in ways as serious as he is not. And changing it in the process.

This post features the link to Nancy articles on her web site. It is a gold mine. For me personally, I like to see what is the genealogy of someone's current thinking/feeling/theorizing/applications.

Then there are the inevitable gems too. For example, in 1997 Nancy wrote in her article, The Hallways of Learning,

Hallways are data-rich.

The context for those three snappy words is: in the hallways of a business a lot of informal, focused, meaning-producing discussion transpires.

(In my terms, cognitive exchange and differentiation occurs in such sites too. I've also been reflecting on how Nancy's Collective Sensemaking exchanges with the KELT and enactivist social cybernetics.)

Here is the translation of a fuzzy snapshot that was taken of Nancy Dixon's notes on a flipchart during the Spring EL COP Conference.

Nine Guidelines of Collective Sensemaking
1. Connection before Content
2. Circles Connect
3. Small Groups as the Unit of Learning
4. Divergence before Convergence
5. Cognitive Diversity
6. Visible Ideas span boundaries
7. Shared Experience builds Shared Understanding
8. Physical Space changes Connection
9. Enable all Voices to be heard

I just checked into Nancy's excellent web site and see that these guidelines are elaborated using an actual case. Her approach seems to me to offer an integration of sensemaking and conversational learning.
