The electronic parts of my benchtop power supply are finished! Now just to build an enclosure to go around the PSU and faceplate.

...and I blew my first fuse! Accidentally shorted the +5V output to ground.

This is why you put a fuse on every output! This particular ATX power supply would happily supply 40 amps on +5V if you let it, resulting in a toasted breadboard circuit!

15 hours later, meat is resting in a cooler, and the Hatch chilis and cream cheese jalapeño poppers are out for a light smoke.

So I tried something new today. I completely got my HLT emptied and cooled off after sparge was done. Then, with about ten minutes left in the boil, I filled it with 4 gallons of water and 20lbs of ice.

I bought these little tiny 12 volt hobby pumps a while back, and hooked one up to the exit of the HLT. To cool my wort, I used tap water initially to get the temp just below 100F, and then I shut it off and hooked up the hobby pump to my wort chiller, with the exit re-routed back up to the HLT.

After this, I recirculated the ice water for about 15-20 minutes, and I was down to fermentation temperatures! I was able to aerate and pitch yeast by noon today...absolutely a record.

Also, I ended up hitting my gravity and volume numbers absolutely spot-on. Successful brew day! \m/ \m/

A little mock-up of the face of my bench top power supply. I think this is almost right. Just going to add a half inch on top and bottom, and then move the power button to the right of the two ground sockets.

I finally made some progress on my benchtop power supply. The old ATX power supply I had sitting around works perfectly, and tonight I hacked together a variable voltage circuit so I can take power from the +12V rail and supply any voltage I want from between about 1.2 and 11.8 volts. Voltage regulator is built using a ten-turn 10k potentiometer, an LM317 voltage regulator, and a neat little 7-segment LED display that shows the voltage at any given time.

Next up, I need to build the box, and cut/drill the faceplate for the fuse holders and banana clips connectors for GND, +3.3, +5, +12, -5, -12, and the variable output.

Before shot! I'm going to smoke this low and slow overnight, and then stick a pound of Hatch chilis out in the morning. When it's all done, I'll pull it and mix in the smoked peppers.
