Sorry if you think this story is getting too much play. But it's freaking terrifying.
This kid is Ahmed Mohamed, a 14 year old nerdy kid in Texas, member of the Robotics Club, and owner of a pretty awesome NASA shirt that I'm sort of jealous of. He does stuff like make his own radios from spare parts and tinker on go-carts and is, by all accounts, a good student and a nerdy kid in the best possibly way.
Over the weekend, he made a small digital clock. He brought it to school, showed a teacher, and ended up in handcuffs.
Police admitted that he told everybody that would listen that it was just a clock. He apparently never made any jokes about bombs, left it anywhere to be found by mistake, or otherwise did anything wrong except perhaps showing it to a dumb teacher.
The police officers who grilled him said he was being "passive aggressive" (he's 14) and didn't have a "reasonable answer" as to why he had the clock. Because "I'm a nerd and I wanted to build a thing" is, apparently, not a rational statement in Texas.
The walked him out of school in handcuffs to a detention center. He was fingerprinted. Obviously this kid is a clear a present physical danger. Just lookit him, the brute.
Saddest bit: "he's vowed never to take an invention to school again."
Well done, Texas. Well done. There's screwing up....and then there's screwing up Texas-style. Yeehaa.
