This is a great idea. I don't know why they haven't already done it. My vote is for using the B-1, it was designed for low level high speed flight so the structure was designed for a higher load factor, most likely, meaning that it could take *some* evasive action if attacked.

An interesting new article out today about how different technologies affect aircraft emissions and costs. <http://www.nature.com/nclimate/journal/vaop/ncurrent/full/nclimate2865.html>

As a kid, Rob was asked to build a scale model of the solar system for school. I think even at the time we though this was a stupid assignment. These people did it an it is awesome, though 7 miles in diameter with earth as a marble.

Cool project from Georgia Tech. using active legs on helicopters to let them land on uneven surfaces and moving platforms. I wonder how much more they weigh than conventional gear. The prototype looks pretty beefy.

Newest results. Getting much closer now though the design is still not clearly superior to optimized conventional aircraft.

Look at the size of those boosters! Each of the four main engines is a space shuttle main engine. Also, altitude test facilities are cool.
Engineers successfully completed base heating testing on 2-percent scale models of the Space Launch System (SLS) propulsion system. SLS will be the most powerful rocket ever built for deep space missions, including to an asteroid placed in lunar orbit and ultimately to Mars. Learn more: http://go.nasa.gov/1KJCPT9 #JourneyToMars
